Adenoids are glands located in your upper airway, just behind your nasal cavity.

Adenoids grow to their maximum size between ages 3 and 5. Adenoids start to shrink by age 7 or 8.

Signs and symptoms of enlarged adenoids may include:

1.Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
2.Noisy breathing
3.Breathing through the mouth
4.Frequent or chronic ear infections
5.Frequent or chronic sinus infections
6.Bad breath

An adenoidectomy is the surgical removal of the adenoids. It is one of the most common surgical procedures done one children, along with the removal of tonsils.

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils.

Signs and symptoms of tonsillitis include swollen tonsils, sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes on the sides of the neck.

Most cases of tonsillitis are caused by infection with a common virus, but bacterial infections also may cause tonsillitis.

Surgery to remove tonsils is usually performed only when tonsillitis occurs frequently, doesn’t respond to other treatments or causes serious complications.
