SWEETS AND CRAVINGS

A parent's guide to Raising Sugar smart children :

Parenting in an era of Diabetes and Obesity is really challenging. Rewarding kids for their good works with sweets , chocolate, icecream etc adds up to the unwanted sugar intake . Even though 'Sugar' is a source of energy, studies show that limiting sugar intake in early childhood reduce the risk of developing Diabetes and Obesity in their later lives
HOW MUCH SUGAR IS OK :
Below 2 yrs - No added sugar
2-18 yrs - 2-4 tsp added sugar
18+ yrs - 5 tsp max
(Added sugar is the sugar added during processing of food and not the sugars naturally present in Milk and Fruits ) It becomes complex as added sugars is hidden in most processed foods ( juices , noodles ,bread, Biscuits etc) which appears healthy
AMOUNT OF SUGAR IN FEW COMMON FOODS : Chocolate Brownie ( a medium size of 60gms) - 5-7 tsp
Orange juice ( 250 ml) - 5-6 tsp Flavoured Yogurt ( 150gms ) - 4-6 tsp
Coke (330ml can ) - 7-9 tsp
Over consumption of sugars can lead to Bloating and GI irritation and discomfort.
WHO Guidelines:
Only 5% of our calorie should be from Sugar ( earlier it was 10%)- ie in a 2000 calorie diet ,sugar should only be 5 tspn .
If you reduce it further, added benefits in the form of less chances of being Obese , Diabetic and dental caries also will be less . Infants and toddlers should get their sugar from Natural sources like milk and fruits SPREAD OUT THE TREATS :
Rather than giving kids sweets at one time or day ,it's better to spread out sugar intake across the week . Excessive sugar intake lead to energy spikes that affect mood in kids especially with ADHD .
To Conclude:
This kind of control is really tough with the attractive and colourful Sweet foods all around us and also the advertisements aimed at enticing kids , but it's worth the extra effect to teach kids the importance of Sugar management in their childhood itself . πŸπŸ«πŸ¬πŸŽ‚πŸ°πŸ§

SMALL HABIT CHANGES CAN REDUCE RISK OF DEMENTIA IN ELDERLY :
Elderly people face significant challenges from age related Neurological conditions like Stroke, Dementia & Depression. Research indicates that certain adjustments to daily routines and behaviours can lower the risk of developing these conditions. A recent study analysis published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry revealed 27 modifiable risk factors which can reduce the risk of these conditions. The risk factors are Bloodpressure ,Kidney diseases ,Raised FBS, Total Cholesterol, Alcohol intake,Diet, Hearing loss,Pain, Physical activity, Purpose of life,Sleep patterns ,Smoking ,Social interactions& Stress levels . According to the study if there are even 5 risk factors in a person, his burden adds up. Each of the factors is important and all of them are interconnected biologically and behaviourally. Modifying any 1 of the risk factors can reduce the chance of all the 3 conditions. It could slow down 60% of Strokes, 40% of Dementia and 35% of Late life Depression. It is seen that the best outcomes are seen when people start minimising the risk factors in their 40s and 50s. Physical activity,Balanced diet, Avoiding Alcohol and Smoking are found to very helpful. It is also proved that Stress Management through Mindfulness,Yoga and Relaxation can preserve brain function in the later years .

DEHYDRATION CAUSING RISE IN GALLBLADDER ISSUES / STONES !!!!
According to a recent article in TOI , doctors are of the opinion that Gall bladder cases are on the rise during Summers!
Reasons :
*Increased heat and reduced water intake
*People tend to eat more oily and fried foods
These two lead to Gall bladder stone ( Cholelithiasis) formation.
Doctors say no other fluids can replace water when it comes to Hydration.
According to them there are 3-4 fold increase in cases recently and it clearly is linked to lifestyle shifts especially after COVID,where there is a marked increase in sedentary habits .This type of lifestyle is a known risk factor for Gall stones.Another big contributing factor is the DIET .We eat more of high fat, low fibre ,highly processed food than ever before.
India traditionally had a very low prevalence of Gallstones . But over the past 1-2 decades ,our eating habits have changed so much that Obesity and Diabetes have become very common and both are directly linked to Gall stone formation .
Adopting a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can help mitigate the risk of Gall stones ,leading to a happier and healthier life .
