WISDOM TEETH

Wisdom tooth is the last and third molar that erupts in each half of upper and lower jaw.

This tooth erupts in late teens or early twenties.
These are also the most common missing teeth.
Our ancestors had large jaws which housed wisdom teeth in proper alignment and probably helped them in chewing foliage.

With the dawn of agriculture, human diet became more softer and resulted in jaws growing less in size.
Due to inadequate space the tooth either does not erupt locking itself inside the bone or erupts at an angulation.
Incomplete/Partial eruption causes more food lodgement more bacterial proliferation causing decay ,gum disease leading to pain ,swelling and jaw stiffness.

IS REMOVAL OF WISDOM TEETH NECESSARY?

See your dentist to know if wisdom teeth have erupted in your mouth.
If erupted improperly at an angulation an xray will help you to see and understand the position of the teeth with the adjacent teeth.
If erupted at an angulation better to plan and get the tooth extracted as it can cause distress to the adjacent teeth eventually.
Also sound and healthy tooth is easy to extract than a decayed tooth.

IS WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTION PAINFUL?

Wisdom tooth like any other tooth is commonly extracted under local anesthesia.
Some amount of bone drilling might be necessary though not all the times that can lead to swelling after extraction.
Dentist will prescribe analgesics and antibiotics that alleviate the pain and swelling.
Soft diet and cool diet is recommended for few days.
Following your dentist’s instructions will help faster and better healing.

Is it necessary to restore the decayed milk teeth?

Many times parents tend to neglect decay in milk teeth as they are just a temporary set of teeth and will be replaced by permanent teeth.

Milk teeth start to be seen from the age of 6 months and are 20 in number by the age of 3 years.

1.Milk teeth play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the child.

2.They help in chewing the food and children with decayed milk teeth will not be able to chew effectively.

3.They play a major role in the development of speech. In children who have lost their front teeth either due to decay or due to a fall can have difficulty in pronouncing certain letters.

4.Milk teeth act as a guide for eruption of permanent teeth. If milk tooth is lost early and the space is not maintained can cause improper eruption of permanent teeth.

5.A set of pearly white teeth adds up to the child’s smile.

Given the above reasons ,follow these simple techniques for a healthy set of milk teeth:

1.Enforce regular brushing habits in the morning and night.

2.Thorough rinsing of the mouth after every meal and snack.

3.Avoid exposing the child to sugary drinks, carbonated drinks and have a check on the sticky chocolate consumption.

4.A visit to Dentist once in 6 months.Flouride application of milk teeth and sealents are the preventive measures to reduce the onset of decay in milk teeth.

5.Encourage the child to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, wholesome nuts and dairy products like butter, cheese etc
