Yajna or Yagna (Sanskrit) is an offering. An offering of thankfulness or gratitude for different things around us.

There are different kinds of offering / Yajna, namely

Deva Yajna (Offering through fire sacrifice/homa) to the Divine Gods/Goddesses.
Pitru Yajna - Offering our ancestors
Bhuta Yajna - Offering to the creatures around us
Japa Yajna - Offering through chanting/ mantras and ...

One more yagna/yajna which is said in Bhagavad Gita (Chap.4.Verse 29) which is the same concept as said in Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Guess what? Post your comments.

And make your own offering to people around us this summer, by providing water/buttermilk/juices etc. and to creatures around us.

Good Karma always pays back - as "unknown" blessings!

Welcome back to after the Chennai floods.

Though there was a lack of internet, power and other essentials everything has been revived now.

But, Chennai is a lot colder. Yes, for Chennai-ites it is winter!

Let's see about how to prevent and protect us in this chilled weather and unpredictable fever/cold/cough with a tinch of Ayurvedic Home made remedies.

Wisdom of our own grandfather/ grandmother comes to rescue rather than medicines over the counter.

Home grown - Tulsi or holy basil along with karpuravalli / Indian borage comes to rescue for cough, common cold and prevents allergies.

Black pepper, dry ginger powder (or ginger) and pippali powder - mixed with honey (1tsp each) helps to relieve allergens and fever.

Nilavembu or Andrographis is the ultimate remedy for different types of intermittent or high fever.

All said, if you are in an already extreme condition, I recommend going to the doctor. But once you are back to somewhat normal, follow above to prevent yourself from re-occurrence.

Now an interesting question to answer you tomorrow.

I recently went to a function and then someone asked me if I was a yoga teacher. Happily I said yes😁❤️

Next question - I have a gastric issue for a long time, I have knee pain too...Can you tell me any two asanas which I can do to release my gas issues and knee issues?!

Sounded to me like a wow! Is it possible to get relief in this way? Is it "wise" to recommend asanas "Just like that" as a DIY??! Why not?

I have gone to a yoga therapist for management / cure of my "diabetes" issue.

And...My yoga therapist asks me to quit "ALL medicines" as I have come to Yoga therapy!!

Sounds WOW! Isn't it??

However, this is NOT the correct guidance or approach!

A good yoga therapy practice or an experienced yoga therapist NEVER recommends you to leave your existing medication.

We need to understand that Yoga therapy is an "Alternative medicine".
It is not a medicine by itself! It's not overnight magic!!

Ok...then...why should I spend my time and effort in taking up "yoga therapy", I can take medication itself right?

To be continued tomorrow 😊

If you have any questions related to yoga, I will try to provide the best answer or guidance.

Do post your comments/questions related and feel free to pitch in with your views too! I keep learning from you too 🤗💕

How to decide if I have to join a "Group Yoga" session or a "Customized - Personalized" yoga session?

Three quick checks to do to join a Group Yoga ✅

1. No medical conditions - you just need a regular routine to set in. A consistent practice for movement and mobility.

2. You lack self motivation and would do better when you join a group of people

3. Children are encouraged to join in a group. It improves not only their body movement and mobility but also their mental health and social skills and interactions along with fun 😊

If all the above three are ✅ then join a Group 💁

Else,

The wise move is to go in for a "personalized" session
- specific to your medication
- specific to your targeted needs
- added advantage of diet, customized pranayama and meditation

Choose accordingly!

Ok, considering you have chosen a personalized session and gone to a yoga therapist., they ask you to leave all medications as you have "chosen" yoga therapy!!

Is it the correct approach of the yoga therapist?

Continuing the topic, what is so special about the third krama or third stage of yoga called - CHIKITSA and what approach is used in this stage?

In the CHIKITSA stage, we approach the individual with a "yoga therapy" approach.

This aims at designing a specific set of Asanas/ postures, meditation and pranayama practices specific to the individual's needs / medical conditions.

Doing a customised or personalized session designed to heal the "exact" medical conditions helps to reduce and manage the condition better leading to early benefits than doing in a group!

Choosing a random yoga group to heal does NOT work!

So, should I not join a group yoga class at all?!?!

Answered Tomorrow 😊

The third and last "Krama" or "Stage" in yoga is called "CHIKITSA".

In Hindi or Tamil we have a similar word to CHIKITSA which means "Treatment".

Like any other sports or activities, choosing or doing the wrong practice or yoga in the "RAKSHANA" stage ends you up in CHIKITSA.

Choosing the right teacher, right practice and doing it the right way is of utmost importance!

Who all comes under this third stage?
Old age people, Geriatrics and people with medical conditions.

I am bedridden, can I do yoga? Yes!!
I can't sit on the floor, can I do yoga? Yes!!

As long as you can breathe, you can do yoga!

So, what approach is adopted in the "CHIKITSA" stage, which helps in curing and managing my condition better?

Await Tomorrow 😊

Second stage or Second Krama in yoga is called as "RAKSHANA".

"RAKSHA" in Sanskrit or Hindi or even Tamil means "protection".

Protection of our existing health without aggravating the existing health and maintaining an optimal health care as we move towards mid age or simply a way to age gracefully!

When we teach yoga for mid age people, we need to consider all their health needs , their lifestyle, medication etc and then design a "customised" yoga session rather than a one shoe fits all approach!

Why so? Just that because they are not used to the practice of yoga from "Shikshana" (early childhood stage).

Now we know about the first two stages, let's move to the third stage called "CHIKITSA".

What does this word mean? Ideas? Thoughts? Leave your comment.

We will talk tomorrow about it 😊

Greetings from

Let's talk about the three stages or three "kramas" of yoga according to Krishnamacharya tradition.

1. SHIKSHANA
2. RAKSHANA &
3. CHIKITSA

In a very sensible and sensitive way, these three stages are defined and time tested from the early days of yoga.

So, what does each stage refer to?

SHIKSHANA refers to "learning". Learning yoga from an early childhood stage. Where as a child the body is flexible, has an ease of movement and is in the growth stages.

When you learn yoga from early childhood, it brings a sense of flexibility and stability not only in the body but also more flexibility and balance in the mental health of children.

It removes anxiety and stress and brings up more movement than more screen hours, helps in balancing the aggressive nature and adamant behaviour in children these days.

What more? If you are interested in joining the children's sessions over the "weekends" reach out to us and see the good change in your child or teenager!

Ok, what about the next krama or stage "Rakshana"?

See ya tomorrow 😊💁

Can we do "108" times Surya namaskar / sun salutations?

Not only on yoga day but on any other day too, you SHOULD NOT be doing anything crazy like this!!

You will either faint or end up damaging your "physical" and "physiological" system!

Sun or Surya represents the heat energy. Despite its innumerable benefits, doing "without" an understanding of your own body condition and an understanding of what sun salutation results in is very important.

When doing sun salutations not only it induces or awakens the heat in the body to burn our fat and other toxins but it also "increases our heart rate"!

Going beyond the capacity, brings more HARM than BENEFITS!

Yoga is all about "balance". It is suggested to do even sun salutations at a balanced level.

Start with an optimal of 3 rounds to a maximum of 12 rounds. (Based on your health).

What are the "three stages" in yoga? Await Tomorrow 😊🤗

Do I need to practice yoga "daily"?

Yes! Of course! Just like we brush, eat and have a bath, doing yoga as part of our daily activity helps.

But, I don't have time to do yoga in the morning. I am in extreme rush in the morning to do yoga, can I still do it?

Please don't. It doesn't help in any way! You CAN'T get into a sudden calm

Do it in the evening when you have some time which will help you to relax the body and the mind and bring down the pressures of the day!

The purpose of yoga is to bring balance. It is a practice to be done with awareness.

Ok, all said and done, now I have joined a yoga session. What should I follow or remember before the yoga session?

Watch out tomorrow :)

If you want to reap the benefits of doing a practice, join the "right" one!

"Not" my cup of Pranayama 🤔

In today's topic we address 3 Q's:

Why Pranayama are NOT common for everyone?

Why should I NOT do "all" pranayamas?

What pranayama can be done by everyone?

Pranayamas though seems like a subtle practice, which is common for all, it cannot be done randomly, just for the fact that every-body composition is unique.

According to ayurveda, every body is made up of 3 doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

So, practices of pranayama should also be given by the yoga therapist/teacher only after "analyzing" the doshas of the student.

Otherwise, you end up doing random pranayamas, which does not help to heal the body / bring up a balance.
Choosing a yoga therapist/teacher who has a base in Ayurveda will get you to the right spot.

If you don't practice the correct pranayama, it brings in more problems than healing you!

For example, if your body composition / dosha is "Pitta" (which is a high heat prone body) e.g.. you get boils often, hypertension etc. then "Kapalabhati" is not suitable for you.
Similarly, if your body is of "Kapha" dosha then "Sheetali" pranayam will not suit you. eg. you get into frequent colds/coughs etc.

At the same time there are certain pranayama which are safe and can be practiced by everyone!
Like "Nadi Shodhan" / Alternate Nostril Breathing / Anulom-Vilom
Bee-Sound Pranayama / Brahmari
