Bakody’s sign
Bakody’s sign is a clinical indicator frequently encountered by physiotherapists in musculoskeletal (MSK) practice. It is observed when a patient places their affected arm over their head, resting the palm on the crown. This positioning is often adopted instinctively as it alleviates radicular pain associated with cervical nerve root compression.
Biomechanical Explanation:
In this position, the following biomechanical adjustments occur:
Shoulder: Abducted
Elbow: Flexed
Forearm: Pronated
Wrist: Flexed
This posture reduce mechanical traction on compressed cervical nerve roots, particularly at the C5-C7 levels, thereby providing symptomatic relief.
Clinical Significance:
The shoulder abduction relief test mimics this movement pattern and is used to assess cervical radiculopathy. If pain relief is noted in this position, it suggests compression of the C5-C6 nerve roots, aiding in clinical diagnosis and management.
