Body safety isn’t a difficult conversation. It’s one of the most important ones you’ll ever have with your child.
Start early, so they grow up with the confidence, clarity, and courage to protect themselves.

1. Don’t overtalk or negotiate
Say it once, repeat it once, then stop. No convincing, no “last chances,” no emotional bargaining. The moment you keep talking, the child learns they can delay you.
Example: “Switch off the TV.” (pause) “Switch it off now.” → then start counting.

❌Not: “Okay last cartoon… okay 2 more minutes…”

2. Always follow through at 3
Your count should lead to action every single time. Calm, firm, no anger… but no backing out either. This is what makes the rule real for the child.
Example: You reach 3 and the child is still playing, you gently pick them up and leave.

❌Not: “Okay fine, just one more minute.”

The internet is full of “natural parenting” advice that sounds harmless until it lands a baby in the ICU.

We had a 4-month-old brought in with poor feeding, weak cry and progressively floppy tone over 3 days. Parents had been following a “natural nutrition” page that recommended adding a drop of honey to water to soothe colic.

The baby had infant botulism.

Now if you go on the internet, you’ll find posts saying “just a tiny bit of honey is fine” or “our grandmothers did it.” What those posts won’t tell you is that Clostridium botulinum spores, naturally present in honey can germinate in an infant’s immature gut and produce a toxin that causes progressive paralysis.
No honey before 12 months. Not a drop. Not diluted. Not cooked into food.
The gut is not mature enough to fight those spores the way an adult gut can. What’s harmless to you can put your baby on a ventilator.

And while we’re here, honey isn’t the only thing well-meaning people give babies without realising the risk. Gripe water, talcum powder, water before 6 months. All things that seem innocent, all things your paediatrician will tell you to avoid.

Trust your paediatrician over an influencer with good lighting. Choose what you feed your child wisely.
