INTERDISCIPLINARY MEET
Department of Pharmacology
Topic: Evidence-Based Prescribing in Dentistry: Navigating Fixed-Dose Combinations and Market-Driven Drugs& New Drug Delivery System
Evidence-Based Prescribing (EBP) in dentistry refers to the systematic approach of selecting medications based on the best available scientific evidence, combined with the dentist’s clinical expertise and the patient’s preferences/needs. This helps ensure that drugs are prescribed only when necessary, in the right dosage, for the right duration, minimizing adverse effects, antimicrobial resistance, and unnecessary costs.
Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs):
When two or more than two drugs are used in a fixed ratio of doses, these are called fixed dose combinations (FDCs). The market now offers many fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) and commercially promoted drugs. Not all FDCs are supported by strong clinical evidence for safety or effectiveness. Marketing influence can lead to irrational prescribing and ethical concerns. Dentists must rely on trusted research and guidelines to ensure rational, patient-centered care.
New Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS)
NDDS are innovative formulations or devices designed to control, target, and optimize the delivery of therapeutic agents in the body. It aims to deliver drugs at the right site, rate, and duration for maximum therapeutic benefit. Focuses on patient-centric therapy, enhancing efficacy, safety, and convenience. It is a combination of advance technique and new dosage forms which are far better than conventional dosage forms and involves medicinal devices. It improves drug potency, control drug release to give a sustained therapeutic effect, provide greater safety and target a drug specifically to a desired tissue.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Vijay V.K., Principal, RVS Dental College & Hospital, began at 2:00 PM. All the department heads and faculty members, postgraduates, interns and students attended the meeting. The meeting concluded with an open discussion on the topic with the attendees, Q/A session, a simple questionnaire was shared to the students & postgraduates whatsapp group and the information on banned drugs list was also shared to the participants at the end of discussion. The session was concluded with distribution of certificates to the presenters.
