Flu season is on and children are down with fever, cold and cough in every house hold. Here are some important facts that parents need to know about seasonal flu.
1. Flu symptoms include high grade fever, chills, severe body pain, sore throat and dry cough, sometimes vomiting and loose stools too.
2. Fever settles down in most children by day 4
3. Cough is the most troublesome symptom which may persist for 2-4 weeks and usually does not respond to cough syrups.
4. Warm fluids, simple diet, plenty of rest, honey and basic medications to alleviate discomfort due to fever and cold as prescribed by your Paediatrician are more than sufficient .
4. Most children recover well except for a small percentage who may require admission for dehydration or secondary complications like pneumonia.
5. Consult your care provider if your child has flu symptoms
6. It is important that parents avoid self medication with multiple cough syrups available in the market, antibiotics etc - Remember none of these are going to help with flu symptoms and may do more harm than benefit your child.
