February 19 I Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Day
Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare but aggressive cancer that begins in the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. Because symptoms are often vague, it is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages.
Types (Based on Location)
• Intrahepatic - Inside the liver
• Perihilar - At the liver hilum
• Distal - Near the small intestine
Each type requires a specialized and individualized treatment approach.
Risk Factors
• Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)
• Liver cirrhosis and chronic liver disease
• Congenital bile duct disorders
• Older age & male gender
• Liver fluke infections (endemic regions)
• Certain genetic mutation
Common Symptoms
• Jaundice
• Abdominal pain
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fatigue
Diagnosis & Treatment
Diagnosis may include imaging (CT/MRI), blood tests, and biopsy confirmation.
Treatment options depend on stage and location and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.
