Let's fight depression
Health, according to WHO, is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity ". Therefore mental health is as important as physical health to lead a healthy and prosperous life.
One of the most common mental illness is depression. According to WHO 56 million Indians are suffering from depression.
A person having sadness of mood, reduced interest in activities, changes in appetite, changes in sleep pattern, fatigue and feeling of hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness for two weeks or more can have depression and should consult a psychiatrist.
It can be treated by pharmacotherepy ( antidepressants) and psychotherapy.
Family members of patient should take care of patient and never let them feel lonely and should listen to them patiently.
They should be encouraged to do simple physical exercises like walking and breathing exercises or relaxation exercises.
They must take a balanced diet and diet rich in omega fatty acids like fish ,etc.
And at last - depression is a treatable psychiatric illness if proper consultation and follow up are done with psychiatrist.
