🎯EFFECTS OF WEARING HIGH HEELS

Intermittently wearing of high heels and not wearing it for a prolong period of time is a good way women can help themselves to free the body of numerous associated side effects of wearing high heels.

It is a common fashion accessory for many women to wear high heels. Many women see themselves as incomplete for party and other important occasions when they aren’t on high heels. They forget about the side effects of wearing high heels and only focus on the elation of their appearance in expensive clothes matched with the high heels.

It is undoubtedly true women look so gorgeous and more executive when they are well dressed in an executive wear which is matched with high heels, but they tend to misuse the high heels unknowingly and later fall prey to innumerable health challenges if not immediately, later in life.

Negative impact of high heels begin to unfold when women tend to wear them more regularly. This article unravel some of these negative effects high heels impact on foot and some part of the body, so that users can properly develop better ways high heels can be enjoyed more than causing harm or health problems.

Based on changes that occur to the body in terms of posture, many skeletal problems can be linked to the wearing of high heels, especially when women makes it habitual act or becomes accustomed to high heels wearing. The following are side effects frequent wearing of high heels can result to;

1. Low back pain
Low back pain is the feeling of pain ranging from moderate to severe intensity at the lower back of your spine. An established factor has been linked to the regular wearing of high heels and low back pain.

It is indeed true that, high heels are the ultimate fashion statement for women. The high heels do not give complete support to your feet. It causes an unequal distribution of weight that may trigger soreness, inflammation and pain in the lower back. ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3206568/)

2. Foot pain
Another problem associated with prolong or regular wearing of high heels is foot pain. High heels or stilettos have a certain shape and design that looks fashionable. After a long day on your feet in that uncomfortable footwear, you are most likely to suffer from a foot ache. You can experience a sharp pain in your toes, sole, arch or heel.

3. Ankle sprains
The position of the feet when you have high heels on highly poses a risk for the development of ankle sprains. This is where the ligaments that support the ankle are strained or injured.

High heels wear can be less detrimental only if you are walking on even surfaces. Potholes, bumps and cobblestones can be potential party-poopers waiting for you to slip and sprain your ankle. Apart from the ankle sprain, a fall like this can also lead to broken ankles, bruised elbows and knees. If you land awkwardly, you might even suffer a concussion. Refrain from using your stilettos on a daily basis. If you must give in to your footwear fe**sh, do so only on special occasions.

Other side effects wearing of high heels can result include the following. These ones do not come with explanations. Research evidence is needed to prove the actual reason that make them potential side effects.

4. Awkward spinal curve
5. Hypertension in toes
6. Knee pain
7. Crooked toes
8. Weakened ligaments
9. Constricted blood vessels.

Undoubtedly, women cannot live their gorgeous lives without the wearing of high heels. This reason alone subject a number of women who are lovers of high heels to higher risk of any of the above listed suggested side effects. However, a modified form of wearing the high heels can reduce these risk.

1. When women only wear high heels for only occasions for a short period, they may lower their risk to these side effects

2. Shoes with short or moderate heels worn over a long period or time has minimal risk than a shoe with very long heels worn even for a short period

3. Wear heels to sit more often than to wear and walk around with them

4. Walking on a flat, smooth surface with high heels is safer than walking with heels on a crooked surface

5. Regular involvement in foot exercises such as stretching, and strengthening the calf muscles makes the foot more flexible and the calf muscles strong to bear stress posed by the heels on these areas.

Myths about osteoarthritis of knee

- Arthritis is purely due to wear and tear on your joints. ...
– Exercise will make osteoarthritis worse. ...
– Osteoarthritis always requires scans. ...
– Pain equals damage. ...
– Osteoarthritis will always need surgery.

Fact is that

- If you build up the muscles around your joints, you’ll protect and stabilize them. You can start with exercises . do leg lifts while you watch TV etc.
- Get a list of safe exercises from your doctor of Physiotherapist.

Role of Inflammation 🔥 in Lumbar Pain

👉 Degenerated discs exhibit abnormally widespread innervation with sensory nerve fibres penetrating deep into the nucleus pulposus [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17905946/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9250186/]. Most discs with positive pain provocation on discography show radial fissures within the annulus [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3589823/].

👉 The process of disc degeneration produces an inflammatory response, generated by cells within the nucleus pulposus, where multiple inflammatory factors are released. Histologic studies reveal ingrowth of vascularized granulation tissue along the annular fissures [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8185559/].

👉 Immunohistochemical analyses have demonstrated cytokine-sensitized nociceptors, phagocytic cells, and perivascular neoinnervation (axono-genesis). Small, free nerve fibres may be found in the outer annulus and extend to the inner annulus and nucleus pulposus [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8185559/, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1063458420311407].

👉 Nerve fibres in the disc may contain nociceptive neurotransmitters, such as substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and vasoactive intestinal peptide. These inflammatory factors migrate through fissures into the outer third of the annulus or into the endplate, where stimulation of free nerve endings results in nociception and potentially pain [https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15686239/]. The degenerating discs thus exhibit free nerve endings (nociceptors) and inflammation, which are contributing factors to a potential pain response [https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jsp2.1196].

Exploring the role of intratendinous pressure in the pathogenesis of tendon pathology 🦵 🦶

🤔 WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC

⇒ Tendinopathy remains a major problem for athletes, accounting for 30% of all overuse injuries.

⇒ Despite advances in tendon research, the pathogenesis of tendon pathology is still poorly understood.

⇒ A disturbance of intratendinous pressure homeostatis has not yet been considered a possible factor.

📣 WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS

⇒ Remodelling of tendon tissue into fibrocartilage-like tissue can result in an increase in intratendinous resting and dynamic pressure, mainly due to an excess of water- binding glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans.

⇒ An increase in intratendinous resting pressure might explain the hypoxic state and the formation of leaky (neo)vessels in tendon pathology.

⇒ An increase in intratendinous dynamic pressure might make tendon pathology progressive and
induce load-related tendon pain.

📣 HOW THIS STUDY MIGHT AFFECT RESEARCH, PRACTICE OR POLICY

⇒ Treatments aimed at inhibiting maladaptive remodelling (eg, modified physiotherapy) or reducing intratendinous pressure (eg, human recombinant hyaluronidase) might be promising therapies that should be investigated.

Figure 1: Illustration of how swelling pressure in tendon pathology may occur, resulting in an increased intratendinous resting pressure.

Figure 2: Illustration of how IDP occurs in tendons, resulting in fluid exudation. (A) During tensile loading, tendon fluid moves radially from the tendon core to the outside, due to lateral contraction and the associated increase in pressure. (B) In tendon pathology, hydraulic permeability decreases due to the accumulation of GAGs and PGs, resulting in fluid entrapment and higher IDP. GAGs, glycosaminoglycans; IDP, intratendinous dynamic pressure; PGs, proteoglycans

A new publication we have been eagerly awaiting 🔥🔥

Evidence of ACL healing on MRI following ACL rupture treated with rehabilitation alone may be associated with better patient-reported outcomes

👉 In a group of young, non-professional sport participants, with an acute ACL rupture, approximately ONE in THERE patients who were randomised to optional delayed ACL reconstruction and every SECOND patient managed with rehabilitation alone (who did not elect for delayed surgery) showed evidence of spontaneous healing of the ACL on MRI.

👉 Participants with evidence of ACL healing reported better sport/recreational function and knee-related QOL 2 years after injury, compared with the non-healed, delayed ACLR and early ACLR groups. These findings suggest that evidence of ACL healing may result in more favourable outcomes.

📣 The spontaneous healing potential of an acutely injured ACL is an important area of future research and should be discussed with patients when weighing up treatment options for ACL injury, acknowledging the evidence gaps in this area.
