You can reduce your risk of gallstones if you maintain proper diet. Because of the role cholesterol appears to play in the formation of gallstones, it is advisable to avoid eating too much food with a high saturated fat content:

Food high in Saturated fat include:
-Meat Pies
-Sausages and fatty cuts of meat
-Butter and ghee
-Cream
-Hard cheese
-Cakes and Biscuits
-Food containing coconut or palm oil

Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity and being overweight increases the risk of gallstones.

Gallstones may cause no signs or symptoms. People who experience symptoms from their gallstones usually require gallbladder removal surgery. If a gallstone lodges in a duct and causes a blockage, the resulting signs and symptoms may include:

- Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the upper right portion of your abdomen
- Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the center of your abdomen, just below your breastbone
- Back pain between your shoulder blades

A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is surgery to remove your gallbladder.

The surgeon makes a few small incisions on the right side of your abdomen (belly). The surgeon uses one incision to insert a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on the end. This shows your gallbladder on a screen. The gallbladder then gets removed through another small incision.

A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is less invasive than an open cholecystectomy.
