Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to permanent vision loss and blindness if left untreated. It is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.
The most common form of glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma, which occurs when the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) builds up and damages the optic nerve. However, there are other types of glaucoma, including angle-closure glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma, which have different underlying causes.
Symptoms of glaucoma may include blurry vision, halos around lights, loss of peripheral vision, and difficulty adjusting to low light levels. However, in the early stages of the disease, there may be no noticeable symptoms.
Treatment for glaucoma typically involves lowering the intraocular pressure using eye drops, oral medications, laser surgery, or conventional surgery. Regular eye exams and early detection are crucial in preventing vision loss from glaucoma
