Multiple Myeloma MM
Patient arrives at the airport anywhere in India where our operation team welcomes the patient and takes him to his hotel.
Patient meets the concerned doctor according to the time of arrival (same day or the next day)
Day 2-7
Patient meets the doctor and gets the evaluations and test list necessary for the procedure.
Your doctor will diagnose multiple myeloma based on your medical and family histories, a physical exam, and test results.
Many tests are used to diagnose multiple myeloma:
Bone Marrow Aspiration and a Biopsy
Complete Blood Count (CBC), the CBC measures many parts of your blood.
Liver Function Test, Kidney Function Test and Serum Protein
Urine tests, Analysis of your urine may show M proteins,
Imaging tests, Imaging tests may be recommended to diagnose multiple myeloma. Tests may include X-ray, MRI, CT or positron emission tomography (PET)
All these tests are conducted and results are available within 5-7 days of arrival in India
Line of treatment:
After multiple myeloma is found and staged, your cancer care team will discuss the treatment options with you.
All multiple myeloma patients less than 65 years of age must undergo Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant.
For Autologous BMT, a patient is admitted for 10-14 days.
Success rate of Autologous BMT is about 99%.
There are 3 main treatment phases in active multiple myeloma.
First Phase: Induction Therapy
Day 7-60
Induction chemotherapy is the first phase of treatment for multiple myeloma. The goal of induction chemotherapy for multiple myeloma is to reduce the number of plasma cells (myeloma cells) in the bone marrow and the proteins that the plasma cells produce. Induction therapy is usually given for several cycles.
4 cycles of Induction chemotherapy are offered. One cycle consists of chemo on Day 1, 4, 8, 11 followed by 10 days of gap. One cycle is for about 21 days.
Induction therapy for multiple myeloma in people who are considered candidates for a stem cell transplant may include these drugs:
Combinations of drugs are offered – VRD, VCD, VTD, KRD.
Second phase: Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant
For Autologous BMT the patient will be admitted for 10-14 days in the hospital. In this type of transplant, the stem cells are taken from your own bone marrow or blood after you’ve had induction therapy to kill the myeloma cells.
Third Phase: Post BMT, Consolidation therapy
Consolidation therapy for multiple myeloma is given after a stem cell transplant. It’s a short course of chemotherapy that helps make the previous chemotherapy treatment and stem cell transplant work better. Consolidation therapy also helps to keep the multiple myeloma in remission for longer. It is a 2 cycles of VRD and then the patient goes into a maintenance phase for another 1 year.
In the maintenance phase, patients are taking, oral medications at home and NO hospitalisation is required.
90% of patients are fit for transplant after Induction chemo, if NOT, they are managed symptomatically unless they are ready to undergo transplant
