06/10/2022

Hunger pangs, or hunger pains, are a natural reaction to an empty stomach. They cause a distressing feeling or an empty sensation in the abdomen. But hunger pangs can happen even if the body does not need food in situations like sleep deprivation, dehydration, eating the wrong foods, smell/sight of food, extremely good or bad emotional state and due to medical conditions/medicines.
(𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒏𝒆𝒘𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚.𝒄𝒐𝒎)

Real hunger is brought on by a true need for food and develops gradually over time. You can wait to eat if you need to, and once you have eaten until your stomach is full you can stop eating. With real hunger, you feel a need to eat, but not necessarily any one particular food. Any food that you like that is available will satisfy your hunger, and you won't feel guilty after you finish eating.
(𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈.𝒔𝒇𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒆.𝒄𝒐𝒎)

False hunger usually involves craving a specific food or type of food. These foods are often high in fat and sugar, and even if you are full you will sometimes keep eating until the food is gone. This type of hunger occurs suddenly, and you feel a need to eat right away. However, once you finish eating you often feel guilty or ashamed.
(𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈.𝒔𝒇𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒆.𝒄𝒐𝒎)

Untimely eating causes overeating (which leads to laziness, feeling of heaviness, abdominal distension, discomfort with increased bowel sounds etc) or undereating (which leads to thinning of the body and loss of strength).

Therefore, to determine whether hunger is false or real, firstly ask yourself this question: What is it that you want to eat? If the answer is “anything” – the hunger is real. If you want a particular type of food, such as chips or chocolate – this is most likely false hunger.
(𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒆.𝒄𝒂)

Further go on to assess yourself on the parameters mentioned in slide 5. Presence of all these symptoms is suggestive of proper digestion, balanced health and good immunity. However if you continue to hog on food anytime without experiencing true hunger; it is probably high time you start thinking about your health & happiness.

“True yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Yoga is not to be performed; yoga is to be lived. Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; yoga cares about the person you are becoming. Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called yoga, its essence must be embodied.” — Aadil Palkhivala
