The air we breathe has reached dangerous levels of pollution.
Air pollution can cause long-term and short-term health effects. It's found that the elderly and young children are more affected by air pollution. Short-term health effects include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, allergic reactions and upper respiratory infections. Some long-term health effects are lung cancer, brain damage, liver damage, kidney damage, heart disease, and respiratory disease.

Here are few diet tips which can help you fight AIR POLLUTION:

1. Add flaxseeds in your diet as they are power-packed with Omega-3 fatty acids and phytoestrogens. It will protect your cardiovascular system and aid in the reduction of effects of smog.
2. Consume a mixture of turmeric and ghee to relieve cough and irritation in lungs caused by air pollution. You can also mix turmeric in warm milk and drink it regularly at night. It also protects the lungs from the toxic effects of pollutants.
3. Have beta-carotene, which is the precursor of Vitamin A and also exhibits antioxidant properties. Foods like dark green leafy vegetables, orange and yellow colored vegetables and fruits are rich in beta-carotene.
4. Have Vitamin E (Tocopherols), a Fat- soluble vitamin rich diet, you can have oregano, parsley, 5-10 soaked almonds.
5. Include Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) rich foods like lemon, lemon juice, oranges for boosting immunity.
6. Have dry fruits pinni, gur ragi sheera to reduce the effect of air pollution.
7. Have 2-3 raw tomatoes in your salad everyday. Tomatoes are rich in beta-carotene, Vitamin C and lycopene that help reduce airway inflammation and reduces the chances of causing asthma and other respiratory problems.
8. Add broccoli to your daily diet to combat the adverse effects of pollutants.
9. Consume minimum 8-9 glasses of water everyday to avoid dehydration.
10. Avoid tea/coffee in your diet to avoid dehydration.

COFFEE BANANA SMOOTHIE

Ingredients:
1) 1 cup chilled brewed coffee
2) 1 1/2 bananas (cut into chunks)
3) 1 cup non fat plain greek yogurt
4) 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
5) 2 tsp honey or agave nectar
6) 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
7) 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg

Method:
• Place all of the ingredients in a heavy-duty blender.
• Blend until smooth and serve.

Benefits Of Consuming Sprouts
1. Increase in Nutrition: In the process of sprouting, the vitamins, minerals and proteins increase substantially with the corresponding decrease in the calories and carbohydrate content. There is an infinite increase in vitamin C content.
2. Good For Pregnant Women: Being high in folate, sprouts are beneficial for pregnant women. Folate is quite essential for fetal development and proper development of brain development of a child.
3. Ensures Healthy Eyes: As Vitamin A content also gets enhanced by a remarkable percentage, sprouts keep our eyes healthy and protect them from all the Vitamin A deficiency diseases of the eyes such as night blindness. Regular intake even delays the development of cataract due to ageing.

You may make sprout dosa or pancakes or mixed sprout bhel with puffed rice. You can also try this delicious Sweet Potato Sprouts Tikki and Oats, Sprouts and Vegetable Uttapam. Make sure you are steaming or boiling sprouts in water before eating them. This will not only make them easily absorbable, but will kill any bacterial growth that may have developed during the process of sprouting.
