🍽️ Eating Together = Feeling Better? It's more than just sharing a meal. A recent study in Japan found that older adults who eat with others regularly report feeling healthier and happier than those who did not have others to eat with. Research showed that almost half of older men living alone eat with others less than once a month, and about 1 in 4 women do not eat with others much more often.

Why is this important? Because social meals are not just about getting your nutrition—they impact wellbeing, reduced perceptions of isolation, and are associated with improved dietary diversity. Simply being with someone and sharing a meal can help alleviate feelings of social isolation. And for many older adults living alone, this kind of socialisation can be central and critical to staying connected!

So whether it's a phone call to a friend, an invitation to a neighbour, or a community meal, finding ways to eat together is well worth it, as it can improve not only what is on your plate but your perspective—even your whole life! Who will you share a meal with next??

Everyone's talking about slowing down. But real wisdom lies in knowing when the right time is to slow down. 

It's not easy to recognize when family, work, and community all pull us in many directions.

Acknowledge the little signals your body gives you: a racing heart, a tired mind, a sense of overwhelm. Understanding and responding with compassion towards oneself is the key to slowing down.

We often think of our habits, defense mechanisms, and emotional patterns as something bad and something to get rid of. How about we try to understand them with compassion first? Why did they begin? What purpose did they serve? 

Gabor Maté reminds us that these patterns and behaviours began as a coping mechanism. Something to save us, something to get us through the environment we lived in back then. 

As Oscar Wilde wrote, "A burnt child loves fire". It's the paradox that even after being hurt, we tend to return to the environment and relationships we knew once. And the pattern keeps repeating. 

Healing begins when we treat ourselves with compassion. When we understand the mechanisms and reasons behind them. It’s not about fixing what’s ‘broken’ within, but understanding what was protecting us all along.
