Chemotherapy has traditionally involved the use of cytotoxic (cell-killing) drugs that attack rapidly dividing cells, which include both cancerous and some healthy cells (like those in hair follicles or the gastrointestinal tract). This often leads to significant side effects. However, recent advances have made chemotherapy more targeted, improving effectiveness while reducing harm to normal tissue. One major innovation in this direction is the development of Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs).

Proton beam therapy is an advanced type of radiation treatment that uses protons, positively charged particles as opposed to traditional X-rays, to treat cancer. Proton beams deposit most of their energy directly at the tumor site, which is also known as a phenomenon called, the Bragg peak. This is likely to minimize exposure beyond the tumor, protecting vital organs. Watch my latest podcast, in conversation with Dr. Dodul Mondal, Director, Radiation Oncology at Max Healthcare

A structured process is followed for cancer drug discovery and treatment clinical trials. It typically happens in 4 phases:

Preclinical Testing – Before human trials, researchers conduct laboratory studies and animal testing to assess a new drug’s potential effectiveness and safety.

Phase 1 (Safety & Dosage) – A small group of patients (usually 20-100) receives the drug to determine safe dosage levels, potential side effects, and how the drug interacts with the body.

Phase 2 (Efficacy & Side Effects) – The drug is tested on a larger group (100-300 patients) to evaluate its effectiveness against cancer and further analyze side effects.

Phase 3 (Comparison & Confirmation) – Thousands of patients participate in randomized controlled trials comparing the new drug to standard treatments, confirming effectiveness and monitoring long-term side effects.

Phase 4 (Post-Approval Monitoring) – After FDA approval, ongoing studies track the drug’s real-world effects, rare side effects, and long-term benefits.
