Today March 14th, 2024 we celebrate the WORLD KIDNEY DAY, an attempt to create awareness about kidney diseases and reduce its burden by early detection and appropriate management.
Children are not spared from kidney diseases and often roots of adult kidney disease are laid in childhood. Due to non specific symptoms in children, diagnosis may be delayed.
Few simple steps can go a long way in promoting kidney health. Follow a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity, intake of enough fluids, fresh fruits and vegetables. Restrict salt and sugar in diet, maintain healthy weight and keep blood sugar under control. Quit smoking (passive smoking may be deleterious to children) and avoid over the counter medications particularly pain-killers. Hypertension is a important risk factor and often accompanies kidney disease. All children above 3 years of age should have their Blood pressure checked anually as recommended for adults.
