3. Tracing its history in India, Mridula Ramesh writes that millets were the staple diet of millions. In 1877, in search of profits, the colonial powers ‘coerced farmers to shift from millet cultivation to cash-crops which were unsuited to India’s rainfall and inedible in a drought’. When the rains began to fail, millions left their withered fields in the Madras Presidency, to beg for food.
4. In 130 countries of Asia and Africa mostly marginal farmers cultivate millets. Millet has the potential to lift farmers out of poverty, fight climate-change and improve the nutrition status of G77 now extending to 133 member states, which contribute towards 80 percent of the global population.
5. In recognition of this fact, 2023 was announced at the United Nations Food Systems Summit as the International Year of the Millets. India is the Chair, and Nigeria and ICRISAT are the Vice-Chair of the Food and Agriculture International Committee for the International Year of Millets 2023.
