In the serene village of Nongbah Bynther nestled within the West Khasi Hills, resides Nina, a mother of three. Her journey through a challenging pregnancy marked by severe anemia unfolded against the backdrop of community support and resilience.
When an ASHA worker alerted the Village Health Council about Nina's precarious health during her pregnancy, the council sprang into action. Established by the government of Meghalaya to bolster local health systems, the Village Health Council swiftly reached out to Nina. Recognizing her fragile state, they rallied funds to ensure she received nutritious meals, which were vital for her recovery and the well-being of her unborn child.
The strong support from the Village Health Council inspired Nina to opt for institutional delivery. However, due to severe anemia, her health continued to be concerning; requiring a critical blood transfusion. Leveraging the CM Safe Motherhood Scheme, the Village Health Council coordinated an ambulance to transport her to Shillong, where specialized care awaited swiftly.
In a testament to community solidarity, the Village Health Council mobilized efforts to secure necessary blood donations for Nina's treatment. Through their persistent efforts, Nina underwent successful treatment and safely delivered a healthy baby.
This journey in Nongbah Bynther underscores the vital role of community-driven healthcare initiatives in supporting vulnerable mothers like Nina through their most challenging times.

For every 2 in 3 Indians with hypertension, routine care for the condition is a pipe dream. Lakri (name changed), a 72-year-old resident of Hajua division, also suffers from this ailment. Burdened by her age and the remoteness of residence, she couldn’t go in for regular checkups. Thus, she remained in the dark about her condition. A WISH-supported ANM discovered her condition during a screening session and told her to visit the dispensary. Concerned by her absence the next day, the ANM revisited Lakri to find a further spike in her BP. The ANM immediately sought teleconsultation for Lakri to provide her with medical advice and treatment. She kept following up with Lakri, ensuring that Lakri followed her treatment regimen. After a few more visits, there was a significant improvement in Lakri’s health. The ANM's follow-ups helped manage Lakri’s high BP and gave her a sense of security and well-being. Dedicated health workers are crucial in managing chronic conditions, especially for elderly patients who may face mobility challenges.
