6 daily habits that changed my life:

1. Waking an hour earlier than I was used to in the mornings. I won't say there are so many ridiculous benefits to waking up early since I'm sure you hear that from your parents and other chirpy morning people. I wanted to wake up an hour earlier than I was used to because I wanted to have that hour to myself. There were no unreasonable demands I had from myself regarding why I needed this small practice. Sometimes I lie in bed and think about the things I want to do for the day, sometimes I'll read the morning newspaper, and sometimes I walk around my apartment and munch on some fruit, whatever prepares me for the day ahead. All I know is that the extra hour in the morning is a game-changer for my mental health.

2. Journaling. I know, I know, I keep bringing up journaling. If you don't write about yourself, do you know yourself? What is there to think about if you don't?

3. Cooking my food with intention. I try to cook at least two meals every day infused with my significant intentions for the day. I used to hate cooking because I did it so often, thinking it was a chore and an added responsibility. Not going to lie, some days, I still feel like it is a mind-numbing chore, but then on other days, I put my intentions into cooking. Sorry if it sounds too woo-woo to you, but I try to put my love towards myself or the thought that I cook healthy food because I love myself in my food, and it makes the process of doing an ordinary chore so much more loveable.

4. Walking. I'm not sure if you care, but I have a dire stomach ailment that is more manageable with walking. Walking around an hour makes all the symptoms passable in my daily life, and it's good for my overall physical, emotional and mental well-being that I'm happy to die on a hill that was conquered by walking.

5. Having a hobby that helps you relax. I have a bunch of them that helps me destress and relax. Sometimes, I watch Netflix. I also read books. I'm in love with making art. There are times when I talk to my friends and crack bad jokes. Sometimes, I stare at the night sky. I believe having a hobby is crucial for our sanity in this multi-layered world that stresses us so much.

6. Yoga. You knew this was coming, didn't you? How can Anjali go on without talking about the Anjali mudra? I'm not sure, my friend, why people don't stretch so often? Stretching out your muscles is a good thing. When I'm having a bad day, twenty minutes of stretching while practising yoga gives me the buoy in the storm I need. Why wouldn't you practise yoga every so often when you get stronger, flexible, and happier?

5 decisions that improved my life:

1. Deciding to become independent at 16. In a household like mine, self-independence at 16 was practically unheard of since it's not a cultural norm to make your money at such a young age. I constantly taught myself to write more and more with better English with the added twist of storytelling. I landed my first content writing job soon after writing on Wattpad for more than a year.

2. Deciding to not be a doctor/lawyer. The decision to forego a career as a doctor put a lot of strain on my familial ties. It was almost expected of me to become a doctor/lawyer because that's all my family had seen. If they chose a woman for education in my family, she had to prove her worth by joining a STEM course, and if she did that, then her education had been for something. People tell me that writing as a career is hokum, and all my hard work through all these years to better myself is poppycock. I choose not to listen to these well-wishers because they come from a source of depression and overwhelm.

3. Deciding to take care of myself. My mom passed away when I was little, and I had to learn to take care of myself and my family. It was sometimes painful but essential because we only had each other. It still surprises me how much I still have to learn in this regard.

4. Deciding to become a writer. Despite all these years of soul-searching and feeling lost, one thing stuck out to me amid the growth and pain. I experienced a few dark nights of the soul and saw with clear lenses only it can provide. I can only express myself through words. Writing is where I shine the most and best and the truest. I don't need to ask for permission to be who I truly am. When I realised this, I also saw that maybe my path would be sprinkled with several obstacles, but what's the fun of a journey without a few hurdles to jump through?

5. Deciding to not let another person hold me back from doing what I want. This sentence is pretty self-explanatory, but when you have been through some tough challenges in your life, and you had to overcome them all by yourself, it's a good thing you develop tunnel vision. All I want to do is grow and strive to be better than the person I was yesterday.

12 things that make life a bit better:

1. Fixing a waking up schedule for yourself. I feel like when we get out of college or have flexible work schedules, a routine really helps us.

2. Moisturise your skin. I have really dry skin, so I try to do this regularly and drink a lot of water.

3. Delete social media that you don’t like. I feel so much better after deleting Instagram. I’m a person who craves communication, and I feel like Instagram is a world of reels-induced chaos with no genuine conversation.

4. Getting a natural fibre made grocery bag. I detest polythene bags, so I always have a nice jute bag that is spacious for all the things I want to buy for my grocery runs. The one I have had been a good friend to me for the past two years.

5. Petting stray animals. I always love when a stray animal comes up to you and looks at you with love. They mostly need love, food, and attention. I always feel good after petting and feeding a stray animal.

6. Doing some form of exercise. I have done yoga for years, and when I don’t feel up to that, I walk or jog or run. It clears my mind, and I always feel good about myself after moving my body.

7. Taking risks. Send that email. Text that friend. Network. Be open. Be direct. Be honest. I don’t think rejection is the end of the world. Sometimes it opens doors for you, and sometimes it proves you wrong, but whatever, you somehow come out of it a better person on the other side. Growth doesn’t happen while you are staying inside your comfort zone.

8. Journaling. I can’t tell you how much I overshare when I talk with my friends, but sometimes, no one is available to chat, and sometimes I don’t want to go to other people with my feelings, and that’s where journaling comes in. I love how much I can go on and on and on about something without someone telling me to shut up. Journaling does that for you.

9. Having downtime. I think this is crucial for your mental health. These days, I love watching whatever series that catches my eye on Netflix without any guilt. My brain needs that space to process all the other moving parts of my life.

10. Get a new mattress if you have trouble sleeping. I made a significant purchase last November and boy, oh boy, it has been a game-changer. I sleep 60x better now with my new mattress. It’s worth investing in things that bring you joy and a good night’s sleep.

11. There’s never a better day to wear that dress/ shirt/ jewellery. Wear whatever is new in your closet. You deserve to look badass all the time!

12. Try lying on your bedroom floor. I do this all the time when I’m overstimulated. It helps you feel stillness and peace. I stare at the ceiling for a while or fall asleep. There’s something so nice about having your body supported by a hard surface like a cold floor.
