"Although we take it for granted, sanitation is a physical measure that has probably done more to increase human life span than any other drug or surgery."
Everyday, the residents of the slum community in the vicinity of SSCBS consume contaminated water. The children, oblivious to the potential health hazard, draw water from a drainage pipe, itself surrounded by filth. The fact that around 80 slum dwellers are compelled to take their bath within a short span of an hour stands glaring witness to the acute paucity of water.
Adding to the menace, everyone, from children to adults, defecate in the open, despite the presence of a community toilet nearby. Open defecation is no more out of compulsion, but a habit.
Project Utthaan aims to fight such grave evils with awareness and dynamic initiatives.
The human right to water and sanitation was recognised by the UN General Assembly back in 2010, it is high time we ensure that it is realised in completeness.
