Winters are challenging for children because sudden temperature changes and frequent viral infections irritate their already narrow airways. Pollution makes the situation worse, as children’s lungs, heart and brain are still developing and are more vulnerable to damage. Those living in high-pollution areas are at greater risk of asthma or wheezing, persistent cough, fatigue, allergic rhinitis, eye irritation and eczema. Studies show that pollution negatively impacts growth, cognition, learning and attention. It is concerning that nebulization has become routine for many young children due to recurring breathing issues. Using HEPA air purifiers, masking, avoiding dust and smoke and choosing safe outdoor timings can help. If breathing issues persist, consult a pediatrician immediately!

The most effective way to prevent influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated annually (Vaccine is recommended beyond 6 months of age and up to 5 years of age on yearly basis).
In addition to vaccination, practicing good hygiene and taking preventive measures like handwashing and cough hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of infection to the kids.

Pink eyes are basically conjunctivitis and can be infective or allergic. Infective conjunctivitis is highly contagious, so teach kids to wash their hands well and often with warm water and soap. They also should not share eye drops, tissues, eye makeup, washcloths, towels, or pillowcases.
Using cool or warm compresses on the eyes may make your child more comfortable and Paracetamol can be used to relieve discomfort.
Contact Dr. Bilal Khan If the pink eye does not improve after 2 to 3 days of supportive treatment and your child has increased swelling, redness, and tenderness in the eyelids and around the eye, along with a fever.
