Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a radiographic test that uses X-ray imaging to visualize the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes. The procedure is typically performed by a radiologist or a gynecologist.
HSG is often used as a diagnostic tool to evaluate infertility, as blockages or abnormalities in the fallopian tubes can prevent the passage of eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. It can also be used to confirm that the uterus and fallopian tubes are normal after a surgical procedure.
HOW IS THE HSG PERFORMED?
> It is typically performed in a hospital or outpatient imaging center by a radiologist or a gynecologist, and may be assisted by a technologist or nurse.
> Before the procedure, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and cover yourself with a gown. You will then be asked to lie on an examination table.
> The doctor will then insert a speculum into the va**na to hold it open and expose the cervix. They will then clean the cervix with an antiseptic solution and insert a small catheter (tube) through the cervix and into the uterus.
> A small amount of contrast dye will be injected through the catheter and into the uterus. The dye will travel through the uterus and fallopian tubes, and X-ray images will be taken as it moves through the reproductive tract.
> The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to complete. You may be asked to change positions during the procedure to get different views of the uterus and fallopian tubes.
> After the procedure, the doctor will remove the catheter and speculum, and you will be able to get dressed and go home.
> It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions for aftercare, including any activity restrictions or medications that may have been prescribed.
IS HSG PAINFUL?
Some women may experience mild to moderate discomfort during a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) procedure. The level of discomfort can vary depending on the individual woman and her tolerance for pain, as well as the sensitivity of her reproductive organs but in most cases it is tolerable. However, if you are concerned about the pain associated with the procedure, you can ask the doctor for pain medication before the procedure or get the procedure under anaesthesia.
It is important to let your doctor know if you are experiencing severe pain during the procedure, as this could be a sign of an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH HSG?
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is generally a safe and well-tolerated procedure, but like any medical procedure, it does carry some risks and potential complications. These may include:
1) Allergic reaction to the contrast dye: Some people may have an allergic reaction to the contrast dye used in the procedure. Symptoms may include rash, itching, hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Most allergic reactions are mild and can be treated with medications, but severe reactions may be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.
2) Infection: There is a small risk of infection from the insertion of the catheter or speculum, or from the injection of the contrast dye. Symptoms of an infection may include fever, abdominal pain, and abnormal va**nal discharge.
3) Damage to the cervix: There is a small risk of damage to the cervix during the insertion of the catheter. This may cause bleeding or scarring and may affect the ability to have children in the future.
4) Damage to the uterus or fallopian tubes: There is a small risk of damage to the uterus or fallopian tubes during the procedure, which may cause bleeding or scarring. This may affect fertility.
5) Pregnancy complications: If you are pregnant and undergo an HSG, there is a small risk of miscarriage or premature labor.
It is important to discuss the potential risks and complications of the procedure with your doctor before the procedure. You should also let them know if you have any allergies or medical conditions that may increase your risk of complications.
