Cancer Drugs Cost Lakhs — Is It Greed or Science?

“Cancer ke dawai itni mehengi kyun hoti hai?
Greed… ya science?”

Dr. Suhail Qureshi explains the reality behind high cost of cancer medicines.

Developing a single cancer drug can take:
⏳ 10–15 years of research
📊 Multiple failed trials before one success
🌍 Global approvals and strict clinical testing

Just like during COVID, we saw how difficult it was to develop even one effective vaccine.

These research and development costs reflect in the final price of the drug.

But there is good news:

🇮🇳 The Indian pharmaceutical industry quickly develops biosimilars and generic drugs, often available at significantly lower cost (sometimes ~20%).

Additionally:
✔ Government schemes
✔ Insurance coverage
✔ Tax benefits
✔ Clinical trials

are making cancer treatment more accessible than before.

👉 If you need such treatment, always discuss options with your oncologist — including affordable alternatives and trial-based access.

Cancer care is evolving — and access is improving.

Painless Mouth Ulcer or White Patch in Mouth? Watch This!

“Kya 3 hafte se aapke muh mein chala hai… jo theek nahi ho raha?
Kabhi kabhi usmein se blood bhi aata hai… aur phir bhi dard nahi hota?”

Dr. Suhail Qureshi explains that such symptoms can be early warning signs of oral cancer.

Many people ignore:
• A non-healing ulcer
• White patch (leukoplakia) or red patch (erythroplakia)
• Difficulty in mouth opening (submucous fibrosis)

These are precancerous conditions that need early attention.

Habits like:
🚬 To***co chewing
🥤 Pan masala / supari consumption

are major causes of oral cancer in India.

Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, oral cancer is often diagnosed late because people ignore early signs or continue harmful habits.

Even celebrities promoting such products do not use them — so why should you risk your health?

👉 Early detection can save lives.
👉 Quit harmful habits before it’s too late.

“Rishtey mein hum tumhare doctor lagte hain…
Naam hai Early Detection, aur main cancer ko mauka nahi deta.”

A little humor with a serious message.

Many cancers can be treated more effectively when detected early. Regular health checkups and timely screening can help identify problems before they become serious.

Awareness, screening, and early diagnosis remain some of the most powerful tools in the fight against cancer.

“Kya chemotherapy ke saath herbal medicine lena safe hai?”

Many cancer patients ask if they can take ayurvedic, homeopathic, or herbal medicines during chemotherapy.

The common belief is:
“Natural hai, toh safe hoga.”

But that is not always true.

Most herbal or alternative medicines were never tested during chemotherapy drug trials.
That means we do not know how they interact with chemotherapy drugs.

Some natural substances may affect liver or kidney function, and that can change how chemotherapy works in the body.

If this reduces the effectiveness of treatment — it can affect the outcome of cancer therapy.

That’s why oncologists usually advise:

👉 Always consult your doctor before taking any herbal or alternative medicine during chemotherapy.

Because natural does not always mean safe.

Stop Forcing Cancer Patients to ‘Stay Positive’

“Treatment ke duran positive rehna jaroori hai kya?”

A patient once asked Dr. Suhail Qureshi this question with tears in their eyes.

They said:
“Everyone keeps telling me to stay positive…
But I can’t always stay positive.
Does that make me abnormal?”

This constant pressure to remain positive can sometimes create what is called “toxic positivity.”

Fear, anxiety, and tension are normal human emotions, especially when facing a serious illness like cancer.

Just like we feel nervous before an exam, patients going through treatment can experience many emotions — and that is completely valid.

Remember:
Being positive is not as important as being real.

Authenticity, emotional support, and understanding are far more helpful than forcing positivity.

Cancer care should address not only the disease, but also the emotional journey of patients and their families.

Not every sore throat or mouth ulcer is harmless — especially when it doesn’t go away.

Head & neck cancers often begin with subtle symptoms like persistent mouth sores, throat discomfort, voice changes, or unexplained ear pain. Recognizing these early signs can lead to timely diagnosis and better outcomes.

If any of these symptoms persist for more than 2–3 weeks, seek medical evaluation. Early action can make a life-saving difference.
