I work as assistant commissioner in revenue department of Jammu And Kashmir State. I believe that none would appreciate you for the position; but each person you are able to help with the powers that you have will remember you all his life. I try my best to come to the expectations of those visiting my office with grievances. It’s not only my job but moral obligation as well. Besides, it gives me inner peace and contentment.
Reaching this position however has not been an easy journey. In 1981, when I was four years old, I came in contact with live high voltage wires; I survived the mishap after doctors amputated my both arms. I often look back and remember those days. I remember I needed help for everything – going to washroom, eating, drinking, and changing cloths. I remember how my sister used to feed me lunch in school. I also remember my hard struggle of practicing writing with my right toe and participation in school activities etc.
My parents have been my strength. They never stopped me from attending outdoor school activities, like trekking, swimming, playing football, cross country run etc. By the way, I’m a good swimmer. My school’s motto was “In all things be a man” and that is what I wanted to be. These days I find parents over caring their children. My parents treated me so well that I never felt I was a special child. Fortunately, my schoolmates would not bully me, instead they would help and even encourage me.
I have grown believing that I have an innate ability to convert my physical inability into my strength. As a child, I remember, I always thought of performing better than others – the normal people – who were around me.
I did my MBA from university of Kashmir, Later my father tried to rope me into business and I started a floor mill. Soon, I realized that I had no interest in business. I decided to appear in the KAS exam in 2004. I cleared it easily. Of the 40,000 odd students who took this exam, many were there for a 2nd or a 3rd time; 138 qualified – 110 from Jammu and 28 from Kashmir -; I was one among them.
I loved playing football; have been member of the Kashmir university team that played in north zone nationals in Aligarh, UP. I am a firm believer in power of human spirit. I had never been afraid of failure and therefore have always achieved what I wanted to. To realise that my story is inspiring others is a power that propels me to achieve higher targets.
Today, I am father of an eight-year old girl and have a beautiful wife. I believe that had I not met this accident I would have never achieved all this. My physical disability has given me a reason to achieve much in life.
