Why Do We Get Food Cravings While On a Diet?

👉🏻Hormonal Changes: When you diet, the hormones associated with appetite regulation, leptin (satiety hormone) reduce and ghrelin (hunger hormone) increases. This might lead to an increase in your overall hunger and desire for food. Many women may experience increased cravings during PMS due to hormone estrogen and progesterone changes.

👉🏻Not Enough Sleep: Leptin and ghrelin are also altered with sleep duration changes. Lesser sleep duration leads to an increase in ghrelin (hunger hormone) that can trigger hunger and lead to overeating.

👉🏻Lack Of Hydration: Drinking too little fluids can also increase the feeling of hunger or cravings in some who tend to confuse hunger with thirst.

👉🏻Increased Stress: Negative emotions and high stress increase the level of cortisol. High cortisol levels may lead to more hunger, cravings and binge-eating behaviours.

👉🏻Overly Restrictive Diet: Very low-calorie diets and rigid dieting (omitting a lot of food groups) is associated with low dieting success due to increased food cravings.
