Shadow

We have temporarily shifted to a new place, and shafting presents its problems. And when the initial hiccups are over and we have so-to-say settled down, here is my picture of a shadow taken on June 16, 2025.

We are now working on September 2024 issue of Optometry Today.

The issue is volume 50, Number 3; and besides regular features, carries articles by Prof Ajeet Bhardwaj, Dr Dwight Akernan, Optom Hemant Ratnaparki, Optom Haziel Rynjah, Dr Narendra Kumar, and Dr Roxanna Potter.

Continuing with the print edition as a challenge, with encouragement from our associates (subscribers, contributors, advertisers, and members of the editorial board), we continue to march on the difficult terrain…successfully.

And rather than increasing the subscription, we have kept the one-time subscription to the quarterly journal the same as before…so that Optometry Today reaches to still more ECPs!

`As an eye doctor, can you tell me if I should apply homemade kajal in my eyes? I am an adult. Is it safe?'

When I was a child, I used to follow the oft-repeated advice: `Naak me ungli kaan me tinka, mat kar mat kar mat kar. Aankh me anjan daant me manjan, nit kar nitkar nit kar’.

But, now we eye care professionals know that apply homemade kaajal may block the punctum, and result in obstructing the lacrimal passage. So the advice is against it.

But, to be fair, to beautify yourself, if you take care to apply kaajal away from the lacimal passage openings, both on the superior and the inferior positions, then there should be no harm.

It’s time to focus on Myopia

Because, more and more children are becoming myopic, largely due to:

∙ Increase in near work

∙ Decrease in outdoor games and sunlight, and

∙ Situation is becoming alarming due to increase in cases of progressive myopia.

What should be done?

∙ The child should take brief breaks after every half-an-hour study, to look out of the window or to simply walk
around the room.

∙ The reading material should not be brought nearer than 40 cm.

∙ The child needs to undergo yearly dilated eye examination.

∙ And, the parent needs to seek eye care professional’s advice regarding special treatment strategy like
Orthokeratology, Glasses with peripheral defocus, and/or Drug therapy.

My today's answer to a question on quora.com:

`What is a PMT test for the eye?’

Refraction in children and those with certain anomalies like Squint, is usually done under dilatation of pupils (with the instillation of an ophthalmic pharmaceutical preparation called mydriatic or cycloplegic). And PMT is the short form of the term Post Mydriatic Test, that is usually done after, say, three days, to ascertain the eyewear Rx.

My today's answer to a question at quora.com:

“How likely is it for mechanical pencils led to get in your eye after it breaks while writing?”

First of all, I would like to remind you the old saying: `Prevention is better than cure’. So, be careful while writing with a pencil, and make sure that the pencil is of good quality, the writing edge is not too thin and sharp, and undue force is not applied while writing.

That said, if, unfortunately, the lead does break (as it happens sometimes), and hurts the cornea, it’s likely to destroy the outer layer, the epithelium, of the sensitive surface, and the condition is not only very painful, but requires urgent expert attention that may involve medication and pad & bandage.

And, if it somehow pierces the cornea and enters the eye, then it calls for immediate surgical intervention.

My today's answer to a question at quora.com:

`Why do our eyes blink?’

Blinking is a reflex, and while it goes on and on involuntarily, we can blink voluntarily as well. The exercise lubricates and cleans the eyes by spreading tears over its outer surface, especially cornea. It also protects the eye by keeping out dust and other irritants, very bright light, and foreign objects.

While contact lens wearers need to blink at a bit faster rate, excessive blinking as such is a disease.

My today's answer to a question on quora.com:

CAN YOU WEAR OLD PRESCRIPTION GLASSES AFTER MENOPAUSE?

Although increase or decrease in hormone level in women can surely have some effect on vision, especially during pregnancy (which is transitory), menopause may at best bring in some presbyopic effect (which otherwise too is imminent in persons over 40 years of age), the simple rule is to undergo yearly eye examination, and to change spectacle lenses as well as plastic lenses are prone to scratches.
