cephalohematoma is an accumulation of blood under the scalp, specifically in the sub-periosteal space. During the birthing process, shearing forces on the skull and scalp result in the separation of the periosteum from the underlying skull bone resulting in the subsequent rupture of blood vessels.Having a newborn with a bruised-looking lump on their scalp can be concerning, but cephalohematomas are generally harmless. This lump should get smaller and go away in a few weeks or months without treatment.
