LASIK, the popular laser surgery for correcting vision, might soon have competition.
Scientists are developing an alternative that reshapes the cornea without cutting, using electricity instead of lasers.
In rabbit tests, the technique called electromechanical reshaping (EMR) corrected nearsightedness in just a minute, with no incisions or tissue removal.
Unlike LASIK, which permanently weakens the cornea, EMR may be cheaper, reversible, and safer.
Researchers stress that human trials are still far away, but if successful, this could revolutionize eye care and make vision correction more accessible.
