Anytime you are doing DB or BB curls, your forearms should not become perpendicular to the floor. At this point there is ZERO tension going to your bicep and instead all placed on your front delt.
The dumbbell can only exert force on one direction - straight down. So if you look at the picture you'll notice the force of the dumbbell is no longer pulling on the bicep.
But if you bring your elbows closer to your body, now the dumbbell is pulling the lower arm away from the upper arm and challenging the bicep again.

Are knee extensions bad for you knees? The truth is they are an exercise to avoid IF you have existing knee problems.
However, as long as you have healthy knees they are perfectly acceptable and can even help to strengthen your knees and build bigger quads as well.
