First Step After Cochlear Implant Switch On | Sound Awareness in Children is the most important step in a child’s hearing journey. This stage is all about helping the child realise that sounds exist in their environment and that these sounds carry meaning. Since the brain is hearing these signals for the first time, it needs gentle and consistent stimulation to begin recognizing and responding to different auditory inputs.
Sound awareness begins with introducing everyday environmental sounds. Simple, familiar noises like a doorbell ringing, a car horn honking, water splashing, birds chirping, or a phone ringing can all be powerful tools. By repeatedly exposing the child to these sounds and pairing them with visual cues or actions, we help build a connection between sound and its source.
Parents and caregivers play a crucial role during this stage. Encouraging the child to turn toward sounds, showing excitement when a sound occurs, and making listening a fun and engaging activity can significantly enhance auditory development.
Music is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to build sound awareness. Rhymes, songs, and musical toys provide rhythm, repetition, and variation, which naturally attract a child’s attention and stimulate the auditory brain. Through music, children begin to notice differences in pitch, loudness, and timing.
Remember, sound awareness is the foundation of listening and spoken language development. With patience, consistency, and the right approach, this step sets the stage for a successful hearing journey.

An incredible experience being part of the Mobile Therapy Bus initiative by The Hans Foundation.

Over five days, we trained young therapists from five states in Basic AVT, equipping them with practical strategies, assessment skills, and ways to guide families in building listening and spoken language through daily routines.

This initiative will bring much-needed therapy services closer to families in small towns, and it’s inspiring to see such dedication to early intervention.
A heartfelt thank you to Cochlear for their support and sponsorship.
