Honored to be invited as a speaker at recently concluded conference ‘Filling the Gaps In Oncology’ where I discussed recent advancements in the treatment of Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC).

From the evolving role of immunotherapy in extensive-stage disease, to optimization of chemotherapy backbones, incorporation of maintenance strategies, and exploration of targeted therapies, the landscape is steadily shifting to improve outcomes in this aggressive malignancy.

Grateful for the enriching discussions and the opportunity to exchange insights with colleagues in the oncology community.

‘Catch It Early, Hit it Hard!! Cancer Screening Saves life’

Many cancers can be detected at an early stage, often before symptoms appear. At this point, treatment is usually more effective, less invasive, and outcomes are significantly better.

✅Breast Cancer → Self Breast examination monthly from the age of 18 years. Mammography every year for women aged 40- 75.

✅Cervical Cancer → Pap smear every 3 years for women aged 21–65years or HPV DNA test every 5 years (30–65 years)

✅Colon Cancer → Colonoscopy every 10 years starting at 50( or FIT annually / sigmoidoscopy every 5 years).

✅Prostate Cancer → PSA testing ± DRE starting at 50 (45 for high risk) after shared decision-making.

Make your health a priority. Encourage your family, friends, and colleagues to get screened according to recommended guidelines.
Because early detection isn’t just about adding years to life — it’s about adding life to years.

Liquid biopsy - A Drop of Blood, A World of Insight!

Liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive test that detects cancer-related biomarkers (like DNA, RNA, proteins, or circulating tumor cells) in body fluids - most commonly blood, but also urine, saliva, or cerebrospinal fluid.

Key Components Detected:
Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs)
Exosomes & microRNAs

Clinical use :
1. Early cancer detection
2. Monitoring treatment response
3. Detecting minimal residual disease (MRD)
4. Identifying resistance mutations
5. Predicting relapse

Advantages:
* Non-invasive and repeatable
* Faster results than tissue biopsy
* Useful when tumor tissue is inaccessible

Limitations:
* Lower sensitivity in early-stage cancers
* Not a full replacement for tissue biopsy yet

Tumour markers are substances, often proteins, produced by cancer cells or by the body in response to cancer. They are typically found in blood, urine, or tissues and can be detected through various diagnostic tests. Significance: 1.Early Detection 2.Monitoring Treatment response.3.Detecting early Recurrence4.To predict disease aggressiveness and prognosis Most commonly used tumour markers :CA125 - cancer of OvaryCEA - cancer of colon (large intestine)PSA - Prostate cancer CA19.9 - Pancreatic cancer, Gall bladder cancer AFP - Cancer of Liver Beta HCG - Testicular cancer and ChoriocarcinomaN.B : Tumour markers are not always definitive. Some benign conditions can also raise marker levels, and not all cancers produce detectable markers.

Why cancer patients receiving chemotherapy experience excessive cold or hot flushes ??? Read the article published in Indian Express based on my interview with the team.

https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/health/hina-khan-feeling-extreme-cold-shivers-chemotherapy-side-effects-experts-9908921.

Chemotherapy can affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature, leading to sensations of excessive cold or heat. This occurs due to various factors, including direct interference with the brain’s temperature control mechanisms, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, and anemia. Some patients experience cold intolerance, while others may have hot flashes and night sweats.

Around 30-40 per cent of patients undergoing chemotherapy report some form of temperature dysregulation. However, it is not a universal symptom. The severity and type of temperature fluctuations can vary based on the specific chemotherapy drugs used, the patient’s overall health, nutritional status, and the presence of infections. In some cases, chemotherapy-induced nerve damage (neuropathy) can lead to a persistent feeling of cold, particularly in the hands and feet. Additionally, chemotherapy-induced anemia reduces oxygen supply to tissues, which can further contribute to cold sensations.

Infections can sometimes cause an unusual drop in body temperature, making it crucial for patients experiencing persistent chills or cold sensitivity to seek medical attention. If a patient feels excessively cold, they should monitor for other symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, or any signs of infection.

Staying hydrated, dressing in warm layers, maintaining good nutrition, and consulting a doctor for potential underlying issues — such as anemia or infection — can help manage these symptoms effectively.
