It has become a real problem with more and more children suffering from it in India .Kids spend less time exercising and more time sitting in front of TV or computer. More young children are feasting on fast and processed
foods, food items that are high on empty calories (calories without any significant health benefit) and not having enough fruits, vegetables and other nutritional food items, and kids have no idea how to make healthy choices. Obesity is linked to-
Earlier onset of type 2 diabetes
High blood pressure and cholesterol
Low self-esteem and introvert characteristic
Poor academic performance
Sleeping disorder/ Insomnia
Heart disease, stroke and death
Stress and Depression
The stats say that in last 20 years, childhood obesity has become more than doubled, 33% of Indian kids are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight and 18% are obese. The prevalence of obesity among adolescent children is 29% in private schools and 11.3% in government-funded schools. If these trends continue, these kids will grow up to be unhealthy adults for the Nation. They will not only have more illness than the people who have ideal weight but also become less competent adults who were obese children and likely to earn less as much as people with ideal weight, and are less likely to marry or get a higher education. Clearly, this is a problem with a long-term negative impact. WHAT IS SCHOOL AEROBICS AND WHO CAN BE INVOLVED?
• ‘SCHOOL AEROBICS’ is a new and exciting Sports aerobics participation program conducted in schools. The philosophy behind it is –Fun, Fitness, Fundamentals and Friendship.
• It aims to introduce basic Sport Aerobics movement patterns to encourage participation, rehabilitating childhood obesity and to improve fitness. Ultimately schools are encouraged to develop a Sport Aerobics routine that can be entered into a State, National and International competition.
• ‘SCHOOL AEROBICS’ focuses on fighting against childhood obesity prevailing in India, fostering child’s life skills and artistic abilities through Sports aerobics.
• It works to strengthen child attitude and encourage the sportsman spirit and enthusiasm in children. Also, this will inspire children in Sports aerobics as effective physical activity towards problems and solutions pertaining to childhood obesity.
• ‘SCHOOL AEROBICS’ therefore consists of both a participation program and a supporting event structure. The program is aimed at school aged children and youths from 5 – 17 years of age, with both gender actively encouraged taking part. SCHOOL AEROBICS PARTICIPATION PROGRAM
The school aerobic program aims to provide a grass-roots entry-level participation program for school students and their teachers wishing to get involved in Sport Aerobics. As sports aerobics is too technical and difficult to implement in a school environment without specific Sport Aerobics knowledge. With this in mind the school aerobic program was developed. The program requires no previous knowledge or experience on behalf of either the teacher or student(s) and provides a sequential program of skill development over three separate levels (i.e. Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3). Level 1 – involves the student learning a “compulsory routine that focuses on basic Sport Aerobics movement patterns and presentation skills. No choreography is required on behalf of either the teacher or the student(s). Teams improve their scores by performing creative positions and formation within the 7 meter square. The routine may be performed as a trio (3 team members) or a group (4-6 team members). Level 2 and Level 3 – as per level 1 however, the routine learnt increases in complexity of choreography, whilst continuing to develop basic Sport Aerobics movement patterns and presentation skills. The routine allows students to compose their own 32 counts of choreography and incorporate this into the routine. SCOPE- WHAT IS THE SCHOOL AEROBICS EVENT PROGRAM? Whilst participating in the SCHOOL AEROBICS program, it is imperative that students are provided with opportunities to perform their routines in a range of environments (both competitive and non-competitive). Schools will be encouraged to allow students to perform their routines at internal school based events whilst also being encouraged to participate in a range of friendly competitive events run by SCHOOL AEROBICS, at both a regional, state and national level. HOW WILL THE SCHOOL AEROBICS PROGRAM OPERATE? SCHOOL AEROBICS is responsible for the production and distribution of the sports aerobics and fitness program and the co-ordination of the school Regional, State and National sports aerobics Championships. Overseeing the program will be a Coordinator supported by a team of school aerobics experts. THE COMPONENTS OF SCHOOL AEROBICS PROGRAMME ARE:
SPORTS AEROBICS
AERO DANCE
ZUMBA KIDS
STEP UP KIDS
NUTRITION FOR KIDS
REHABILITATING CHILDHOOD OBESITY
WHAT IS SPORTS AEROBICS? Sport Aerobics (also known as Aerobic Gymnastics) is the only athletic sport founded as a fitness activity that today is recognized by the International Olympic Committee and is poised to become an Olympic Sport. Sport aerobics is performed as a one-minute and forty-five second (1:45) choreographed routine. The athlete must demonstrate the components of fitness including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, agility, speed, and power through continuous movement patterns. Sports aerobics also popular as aerobic gymnastics and became officially affiliated with FIG (federation international de gymnastique) in 1996 and is now the sixth discipline. As a spectator event it has obvious appeal: the sports combine fast dynamic action originating from gymnastics and aerobics. Categories include pairs, trios, group and individuals. Aerobic activity trains the heart, lungs and cardiovascular system to process and deliver oxygen more quickly and efficiently to every part of the body. The Federation International de gymnastique (FIG) – the only body recognized for aerobics gymnastic by the International Olympic committee (IOC), The General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) and the International World Games Association (IWGA) – has included and developed this sports discipline in its General Gymnastics activities since.
