π What is Chemosis?
Chemosis means swelling (edema) of the conjunctiva, the thin, clear tissue covering the white of your eye and the inside of your eyelids. It may look puffy, jelly-like, or blistered, and in severe cases, it can even balloon out over the cornea.
π Causes include:
β’ Eye infections (bacterial, viral, allergic conjunctivitis)
β’ Allergic reactions (seasonal allergies, eye drops allergy)
β’ Trauma or surgery to the eye
β’ Systemic conditions (e.g., thyroid eye disease, severe inflammation)
β οΈ Symptoms:
β’ Puffy, swollen conjunctiva
β’ Redness & tearing
β’ Foreign body sensation
β’ Difficulty closing the eye fully in severe cases
π Treatment depends on the cause:
β’ Antibiotic drops/ointment (for bacterial)
β’ Supportive care like cool compresses (for viral)
β’ Antihistamine/mast cell stabilizers (for allergy)
β’ Keep eyes clean & avoid rubbing
π¨ If chemosis is sudden, severe, painful, or affects vision, consult your ophthalmologist immediately β it may indicate a serious problem like orbital cellulitis.
