The parents of Jyoti Singh Pandey, who was killed in a horrific gangr**e in the Indian capital of New Delhi on December 16 in 2012, have opposed the name 'Sakhi' for the one-stop crisis-centre for women across India.

"How can the name be changed when initially such centres that were to come up across the country were to be named as Nirbhaya under the previous UPA government?" said Badri Singh Pandey, the victim's father. He further added that the name Nirbhaya is synonymous with "fight against injustice being meted out to women in their daily lives".

Sakhi centres will come up in all the 640 districts across India along with 20 additional locations. They will be one-stop crisis centre that will address the issues of injustice that women face everyday.

The programme to launch such centres was conceived as a tribute to the victim of the December 16, 2012 gang-r**e case.

But her parents have alleged that the government was trying to wipe off the account of their daughter's sufferings, PTI said.

The victim's father rued that the Nirbhaya Fund, a corpus announced by Union government in 2013 budget, was not being "properly utilised" and that there still were several dark spots in the city, which needed to be lit up.

"A substantial amount of Rs 500 crore from the Nirbhaya Fund is being used on installing CCTV cameras at railway stations, but that should have been done by the Railways. Tell me, how many victims of r**e have been benefited by the fund?" he asked.

The parents visited 'Gandhi Samadhi' today to remember their 23-year-old daughter, who died on December 29, 2012, at a hospital in Singapore where she was airlifted from Delhi.

The Health Ministry has recommended that women, irrespective of their marital status, be permitted to seek abortion, in an amendment to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act.

At present, single women, including r**e survivors, can seek legal abortion only if the foetus manifests congenital defects, that too only within a gestation period of 20 weeks. Failure of contraceptives is currently a lawful reason for abortion only if the woman is married and the couple wants to limit the number of their children.

If the Health Ministry’s recommendation gets the requisite Cabinet and Parliamentary approval, it will be a huge move forward in acknowledging the s*xual autonomy and legal rights of single women.

There have been many preventable deaths of women due to botched illegal abortions by quacks taking advantage of their lack of legal options. The ministry has also recommended allowing homeopaths, nurses and midwives to conduct non-invasive abortions with training.

The MTP Act currently allows a woman to get an abortion within 20 weeks, provided a registered medical practitioner diagnoses grave danger to the pregnant woman’s physical and mental health. The Act also allows abortion if the foetus manifests severe abnormalities. Abortion beyond 20 weeks is also legal if a registered medical practitioner, in good faith, thinks that emergency termination is necessary to save a pregnant woman’s life.

Abortion – a tough decision to make
Abortion is a topic that is often painted in complete black and white. All over the world, there are the pro-life (anti-abortion) and pro-choice (abortion rights) camps, and never do the twain meet. People who strongly identify with the philosophy of either of these groups fail to understand the intricacies in this quagmire of an issue.
In a perfect world, everybody is educated about safe s*x and has access to contraception, and there are no unwanted pregnancies, but of course, we do not live in a perfect world. Even those who do have access to contraception must face the possibility of contraception failure.

Exemptions and complicated legal routes

In July this year, the Supreme Court passed a landmark judgement allowing a 26-year-old r**e survivor to terminate her 24-week pregnancy, since tests confirmed that the foetus had genetic deformities only after the legally permissible 20-week time period. Mentally too, she was deemed too traumatised to go through the pregnancy.

When the MTP Act came into being in 1971, there were no ultrasounds or foetal monitors to carefully screen the foetus’s physical development. The Amendment to the Medical Termination Pregnancy Act will also extend the time frame for the termination of pregnancy to 24 weeks, while setting no time limit for the termination of a foetus with serious genetic defects. These changes will bring the law more in tune with international laws and makes sense with recent progress in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics. The delay in its approval is forcing women to take the illegal route in a situation that is very delicate and time-bound.
The above mentioned are extreme cases, where there is a reason for abortion like the mental trauma of r**e or genetic abnormalities of the foetus. By including s*xually active single women who are seeking abortion due to failure of contraception in its purview, the act will become more progressive and in tune with the times.

A device which goes into your ear, can now save you from s*xual harassment. Four engineering students now have an answer to the women’s security issue in India. These students have come up with the idea and device after one of their friends almost faced s*xual harassment. Their friend, the woman, was unable to make a call by taking out her phone when she was stuck in that situation. This became an incident which triggered the students into action as they tried to innovate something to help people in such situations. A year after that incident, now they have a working prototype. Acting as an interface between the smartphone and the brain, this device is like an electroencephalogram (EEG).

NeuroBuds, a device which goes into your ear, can now save you from s*xual harassment.
