A rare case of scoliosis (curved spine) was surgically corrected in a 10-hour marathon surgery by a Ludhiana-based neuro surgeon, Dr Damandeep Singh Makkar, at Arora Neuro Centre, Punjab.

Kanchana Herath, 14-year-old daughter of Dr Jagath Herath, an orthopaedic surgeon from Candy, Sri Lanka, had been suffering from an abnormal bending and rotating of the spine since the age of four years.

Dr Makkar, having received training from Cincinnati Children Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, to treat such conditions, has published and presented such cases at the prestigious Scoliosis Research Society and has performed more than 15 such surgeries.

Congratulations Dr. Makkar for bringing smiles to the little child!

Avoid high calorie and highly processed foods with less vitamins and low fibers, foods with higher trans fats and saturated fats. All these being properties of Junk Food. A healthy idea: Don't sit still! Couch potatoes, computer addicts, and all who remain glued to a chair all day long have a high risk for joint pain. Less movement means more stiffness in your joints. So get up and get moving. Change positions frequently. Take frequent breaks at work, and stretch or go for a short walk. If you can't leave the office, try taking phone calls while standing.

Well heard all of us that an active life is critical for a healthy heart. It actually reduces the heart disease risk to a great extent. The good thing is, reaping the benefits of regular cardio is not a rocket science. At least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic ACTIVITY (equivalent of a brisk walk) on most days of week, preferably 5 days, is what the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends. Vigorous aerobic activity (jogging, for instance) 20 Mins for 3 days a week is another option. It’s even better to have higher activity levels at different times of the day, (say 3 times for 10 mins each). It not only keeps your heart and health sound, but also adds to your energy level.
Take your activity and fitness level to a higher degree by following these 10-minute exercises. They all count towards the daily goal and also help in burning calories.

Dance to your favorite songs (54 calories) – Western, Bollywood or Bhangra, whats your favorite?

Go for a walk with a friend or your spouse after dinner (38 calories) – Stop that extra fat on your belly...

Play an outdoor game with your kids or grandkids (46 calories) – Dream of your kid wearing the Indian Jersey, motivate and get motivated for a healthy life...
