We proudly launched the Guidelines on the Management of
in , originally introduced in 2015.

After its revision now in 2025 nearly a decade later, a common question was raised:

What has changed in the new guidelines?

This is indeed a critical question. With the support of a team of experts, we were able to highlight key advancements and updates:

• Earlier, screening was not happening in primary eye care. With newer technologies like AI-enabled fundus cameras, the new guidelines recommend screening at primary health centres, aiming to raise coverage to 80% from the current 10%.
• Screening should begin at the time of diabetes diagnosis, with annual follow-ups thereafter.
• Stronger emphasis on public awareness that diabetes can affect vision and cause blindness. Everyone with diabetes must undergo regular DR screening.
• Lifestyle changes and better diabetes management are encouraged to prevent early complications such as diabetic retinopathy.
• DR screening should be done only where diagnosis and treatment facilities exist. Clear referral pathways must be established to ensure timely care for all identified cases.

India’s diabetes burden has expanded rapidly over the past decade, while clinical practices, diagnostic tools, and technologies have advanced significantly. This created a clear need to update and strengthen national guidance.

Today, we launched the updated National Guidelines on the Management of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) — a robust, evidence-based framework designed to enhance early detection, timely intervention, and equitable access to quality eye care across India.

The Summit brought together leaders from MoHFW, NITI Aayog, premier hospitals, NGOs, and industry partners for meaningful discussions on integrating DR screening into national health strategies.

This launch marks a historic milestone for eye health in India. It reflects the collective expertise, dedication, and collaboration of a dream team of experts who worked tirelessly to revise and strengthen this manual.

Our heartfelt thanks to each one of them for contributing their knowledge, time, and commitment to improving DR care for millions across the country.
