A ganglion is a common, benign, fluid-filled swelling that arises from a joint capsule or tendon sheath, most frequently seen around the wrist and hand. It contains thick, jelly-like synovial fluid and appears as a smooth, round or oval lump that may vary in size over time. Ganglions are usually painless but can sometimes cause discomfort, weakness, or restricted movement, especially if they press on nearby nerves. The exact cause is often unknown, though they may be associated with repetitive joint use, minor trauma, or joint irritation.
