What is PCOS? The hidden struggle of one in five Indian women | Explainer

PCOS is a complex hormonal condition affecting millions of women, particularly in India. While there's no cure, effective management through lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, and mental well-being can help lead a fulfilling life.

Simran Mudgal was 21 when she first began noticing unsettling changes in her body. Her periods grew irregular and painfully delayed, fatigue made even simple tasks exhausting, and coarse facial hair appeared along her chin and jawline. “I felt like there was a lot of imbalance in my body,” she recalls. In 2023, doctors finally diagnosed her with Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS).

The diagnosis left her vulnerable, especially as she was already recovering from another illness. Her doctor advised lifestyle changes- regular sleep, a balanced diet, exercise, and care for her mental health. At first, hormonal imbalances and body image struggles were overwhelming, but with her parents’ support and a focus on nutritious food and workouts, Simran gradually found balance.

Declare cancer notifiable nationwide, tax to***co to fund research: Parliament panel

In its 163rd report presented to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the Committee on Petitions headed by Narain Dass Gupta said, “Given India’s rising cancer burden, the Committee is of the view that declaring cancer notifiable would ensure systematic reporting, generate real-time and credible data, strengthen surveillance and enable evidence-based policymaking.”

At present, cancer data comes largely from the National Cancer Registry Programme, which covers only about 18 percent of the population, a figure the panel described as insufficient to track national trends.

Several states have already made cancer notifiable, but a uniform policy is missing.

Bridging the Organ Gap: Who’s Accountable?
Dr Arvinder Soin, in conversation with First Check, says, "How do you spread that awareness? It has to be the state that does it. Any number of NGOs and hospitals and doctors and you and I can keep talking about it. But it's not going to happen as a movement nationally. Unless the government or the state governments and the central government give it a huge push. And they are. Let's be honest and fair. The push for organ donation has never been more... And the push needs to continue until we achieve the donation rates that we need."

India’s struggle for independence demanded extraordinary courage.

For some, that courage was tested not just by prison or persecution —
but by illness.

While the world saw protest and defiance, they were also enduring pain, disease, and exhaustion behind closed doors. And still, they chose to fight.

This Independence Day, we honour Freedom Fighters Who Fought Through Chains and Pain.

Happy Independence Day 🇮🇳

"The Night That Changed the Future of Liver Transplants in India"
This World Organ Donation Day, join us in conversation with Padma Shri Dr Arvinder Soin, as he reflects on India’s first successful deceased donor liver transplant and the journey that followed—touching on transplantation, counselling, and coordination.

In 1998, India had no formal transplant systems—no coordinators, no trained counsellors.
A grieving family, inspired by a previous cornea donation, wished to donate their loved one’s organs. Two patients were in urgent need of a liver.

And then what?
Dr Soin and his colleague personally counselled the family, something rare for surgeons to do even today. They agreed. And a life was saved.

Watch this inspiring story—one that’s not just a tale from the past, but a turning point in India’s medical history.

Are heart attacks more common on Mondays and during winter holidays?

A heart attack could manifest at any time of the day and catch one off-guard, based on many factors that have been festering in one’s mind and body, or sometimes because of an abrupt malfunctioning of a vital bodily parameter.

However, there’s a theory that has been doing the rounds on some prominent social media platforms that claims that heart attacks are more common at a particular time of the day, on a specific day of the week, during a certain time of the year.

We found that- One is most vulnerable to a heart attack on a Monday morning and during cold winters. But more research may be needed to establish if it is true for India.
