According to Dr Astik Joshi, gaming becomes problematic when it starts replacing normal coping mechanisms and daily responsibilities.

“If gaming leads to neglect of sleep, social interaction and self-care, it should be seen as a warning sign,” he said. “Withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, anger or restlessness when not gaming are also indicators of potential addiction.”

Intense online gaming can quietly stress the body, raise blood pressure and affect mental health, experts say, as growing cases of gaming-related health emergencies prompt fresh warnings about balance and screen habits.

Dr. Astik Joshi, Child, Adolescent and Forensic Psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, says he is witnessing a worrying rise in mental health issues linked to excessive screen use. “More than ever before, I am seeing increased anxiety, trouble sleeping, problems with focusing, and depressed mood due to too much time spent using screens,” he explains.

After the Ghaziabad sisters’ suspected su***de, psychiatrist warns that excessive screen use and online gaming addiction may worsen children’s mental health, urging awareness, supervision and habits to protect young minds.

Many people assume sleeping in on weekends serves the same purpose, but experts disagree. Dr Astik Joshi, Child, Adolescent & Forensic Psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital, New Delhi, explains that the two are fundamentally different.

He explains that sleep banking is a proactive strategy meant to prepare for an upcoming lack of sleep, while weekend catch-up sleep is reactive—it tries to compensate for what’s already been lost.

'Sleep banking' is often oversimplified online as nothing more than getting a little extra sleep to cope better with long hours of wakefulness.

“There’s a particular kind of relationship that doesn’t just break your heart, it hijacks your nervous system. You know something is wrong. Friends can see it. Logic agrees. And yet, leaving feels harder than staying,” says Dr Astik Joshi, psychiatrist at Fortis Healthcare, Delhi.

This is because of trauma bonding, a survival-driven attachment where fear, relief and hope get wired together so tightly that walking away can feel more frightening than enduring the pain. According to Dr Joshi, for many, the roots of this pattern lie not just in the present relationship, but in unresolved wounds carried quietly from the past.

Trauma bonding explains how unresolved emotional wounds, brain chemistry and fear-based attachment can trap people in harmful relationships that feel addictive and difficult to escape

Why experts say children’s mental health needs dedicated funding:

Mental health experts say children and adolescents remain one of the most underfunded groups in India’s health system.

Dr Astik Joshi, child, adolescent and forensic psychiatrist based in New Delhi, calls for a dedicated system of care.

“Allocating a significant budget to children and adolescents can prevent future mental health disorders,” he says, citing evidence from the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium in the US.

He also emphasises investing in physician-scientists as system builders, not just clinicians.

“We need physician leaders who can train future doctors to global standards, regardless of geography,” he says.

Ahead of Union Budget 2026, doctors, hospitals and medical device leaders flag priorities for higher public health spending, cleaner air, cancer prevention, affordable medicines, mental health funding and stronger primary care.

Child, adolescent and forensic psychiatrist Dr Astik Joshi said, "Performance-enhancing substance misuse among professional athletes is often driven by intense competitive pressure and the fear of underperforming. When sportspersons struggle with physical pain or mental stress that affects performance, the risk of misuse increases. Substances like morphine may be used to suppress pain beyond safe limits, while drugs such as darbepoetin are misused to boost endurance by increasing oxygen delivery to muscles. Although these drugs have valid medical uses, their non-therapeutic use can mask injury, strain the body unnaturally, and pose serious health risks."

Dr. Astik Joshi, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist told News18, “Anxiety disorders have been diagnosed in younger children over the last several years than was previously the case. Today, parents and clinicians can recognize children with anxiety at a much earlier age, for example, in elementary school. Recognizing anxiety in younger children can help overcome barriers in their environments and improve the quality of life for them, but this also indicates a growing number of stressors in their environments."

Doctors identified the episode as a severe anxiety attack, and a week later further evaluation revealed anxiety disorder, a condition more commonly diagnosed in adulthood
