Yoganusasanam - Iyengar Yoga Delhi

Yoganusasanam - Iyengar Yoga Delhi Yoganusasanam by Neeru Kathpal offers classes based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the foremost exponents of yoga in the world today. K. S.

Neeru Kathpal started learning Iyengar Yoga in 1999. She is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and a regular practitioner for over 15 years now. She dedicated herself to Iyengar Yoga in 2000 and began teaching in 2010. Neeru has had the great fortune to receive her teacher training certificate from BKS Iyengar. Neeru follows the traditional, disciplined Iyengar approach to yoga with a lot of energy and humor. Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by B. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga that is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment. Iyengar Yoga often makes use of props, such as belts, blocks, bolsters, benches and blankets etc as aids in performing asanas. The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain, and also allowing elderly, injured, tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully supported methods. Iyengar Yoga differs from the other styles of yoga by three key elements: Technique, Sequence and Timing.

• Technique refers to the precision of the body alignment and the performance of pranayama.
• Sequence means the sequences in which asanas and breathing exercises are practiced. Following the specific sequence is important in achieving the desired result, because only the combination of certain poses and breathing techniques can ensure the expected positive effect.
• Timing is the third key element, which defines the time spent in each pose or pranayama.

Happy Deepavali !

Deepavali literally means a row of Lights. ... In general, Deepavali signifies the triumph of good over evil, of righteousness over treachery, of truth over falsehood, and of light over darkness. However, Deepavali is not a festival of lights in order that we may burn candles, fireworks and sparklers.

Like all Indian festivals, Deepavali too has important astrological significance. It marks the new lunar year and celebrates the season of harvest as well. On this day, it is believed that the planetary positions are also very favorable and hence, help bestow wealth and prosperity on all.

The idol of Patanjali shows him as half-man and half-serpent. The human form indicates the individuality of man, since he has been endowed with intelligence to use his own efforts to reach the goal. The form of the serpent suggests the motion and continuity of Sadhana, which cannot end until the goal is reached.

Patanjali guides us to move like a serpent, intensely, silently and fast on the path of Yoga and to be a tivrasamvegin, the ultimate type as a pupil.”

Inversion boosts the major systems of the body (circulatory, respiratory, nervous and glandular) and gives rest to the heart. Headstand is the more stimulating and invigorating pose. It helps to increase memory and concentration with added blood flow to the brain and enhances mental capacity and emotional stability. Shoulderstand is the nurturing pose. It is cooling and quietening and a great aid to glandular and hormonal health. The two poses together bring a balance to our body and mind. They are also said to bring out the truth of how we feel.
The practice of these inverted postures brings further health benefits. They strengthen the lungs and assist in the removal of congestion and catarrh, particularly important in the winter months. They help achieve regularity in digestion and elimination, thereby facilitating proper nourishment of our body as well as removing harmful toxins. They bring vitality to the parts of us that are sluggish.
For women, hormonal equilibrium is assisted by the practice of inversions. In pregnancy, if they are already part of one’s practice, they help to stabilise the system at this delicate time. They are also useful in cases of prolapse of the uterus and menstrual disorders.
In short, the inverted postures bring about good health and wellbeing, from the inside out. Headbalance primarily affects the brain and helps to develop a vigorous body, a strong spine and a disciplined mind. Shoulderstand offers some of the same benefits but gives more of a feeling of peace. It is an excellent pose for convalescence as well as being one of the postures that strengthens the system so as to best avoid illness.

B.K.S. Iyengar calls the Iyengar Yoga method “meditation in action.“ Students are taught to be in the present moment through the precise alignment of the body, mind and breath while engaging in the practice of the postures (asana) and breath control (pranayama).
Strength, flexibility and focused concentration are developed systematically while learning the logical progression of the postures at each level of practice. The use of props make the beneficial effects of the poses accessible to all and deepen the mind-body connection.

In Iyengar yoga, intensity refers to focused mental engagement and precise physical effort, not necessarily strenuousness or speed, distinguishing it from more physically demanding styles . It involves deeply immersing oneself in the practice, paying keen attention to body alignment, and holding poses with precise effort to cultivate a strong mind-body connection. The physical intensity varies with the sequence of poses and the use of props, but the core principle remains one of mindful, detailed concentration rather than high-impact movement

Virbhadrasana 1 with the support of the corner.
“The most important benefit of usage of props stimulates the practitioners’ body and mind and create zeal to stay longer and longer and make the sadhaka a lifelong student of yoga.”

BKS IYENGAR: PUNYATITHI: 14TH DEC 1918 - 20TH AUG 2014
“I embarked on the practice of asana as a man might set off to sail the world in a craft he could barely handle, clinging to it for dear life and finding only solace from the stars. Although I knew that others had sailed the world before me, I did not have their maps. It was a voyage of discovery. In time I came across some maps, usually charted some hundreds or thousands of years before, and found that my discoveries corresponded with and confirmed theirs. I continued, heartened and encouraged, to see if I too could make their distant landfalls and better learn how to handle my ship. I wanted precisely to chart every coastline, measure the depth of every sea, happen on beautiful unknown islands, and record each perilous hidden reef or tidal current that threatens our navigation of the ocean of
It would be impossible to overestimate the gratitude I bear to this great subject that saved and uplifted me”.

Key aspects of Trikonasana in Iyengar yoga and how we can get everything with the help of Tressler.
• Foundation:
Establishing a strong base with the feet and legs is crucial. Feet are typically spread wide, with the outer hip of the front leg drawn back and the opposite hip moving forward.
• From both the sides feet are fixed and this is giving strong foundation

• Alignment:
Precise alignment of the spine, legs, and arms is emphasized, ensuring a straight line from the back heel through the middle of the foot.
• Tressler is giving the correct alignment and both the sides are parallel to each other.

• Extension:
The pose requires lengthening the spine, torso, and arms, resisting the effects of gravity.
• Tressler is giving complete length.

• Rotation:
The torso is encouraged to rotate away from the floor, with the shoulder blades moving down and forward to open the chest.
• With the tressler complete rotation is possible.

• Breath:
Maintaining steady, even breaths throughout the pose is important for both physical and mental stability.
• Because of the support no chance of breathlessness.

In Iyengar yoga, straightening the legs in poses is a key element that enhances energy flow, improves circulation, and promotes overall body awareness. It’s not just about achieving a straight line; it’s about actively engaging the muscles and creating a sense of length and expansion throughout the limb. This focus on alignment and extension helps to refine the poses and deepen the practice.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:
• Creating Lines of Energy:
Straightening limbs, including legs, creates clear and lengthened lines of energy through the body. This channeling of prana (life force) through the nadis (energy channels) helps to remove blockages and allows energy to flow more freely.
• Expansion and Tension Release:
Actively straightening and lengthening the legs in Iyengar yoga facilitates expansion, both physically and energetically. This expansion helps to decompress joints, release unnecessary muscular tension, and open up the body.
• Improving Circulation:
Straight legs, especially in standing poses, support better blood flow and circulation. This improved circulation nourishes the tissues and contributes to a greater sense of vitality.
• Building Stamina:
Poses that require straight, strong legs, such as Ardha Chandrasana, Virbhadrasana 3 encourage energy flow and help build stamina.
• Mindfulness and Self-Awareness:
Iyengar Yoga emphasizes body awareness and control, which can be enhanced through mindful attention to leg alignment. This mindful connection promotes mental clarity, reduces stress, and brings a sense of peace.
