For the first time in North Karnataka, in our very own Dharwad, history is created🎖️🏆 by doing Bilateral (both ears, simultaneous) Cochlear Implant surgery at Unity Super-speciality hospital Dharwad.

The surgery was done by the eminent Dr Shankar Medikeri (Association of Otolaryngologists of India President Elect and Dr Aniketh Pandurangi (MS, DNB, MNAMS, ENT surgeon, Dharwad) on 12th March 2023.

This is the first Cochlear implant done in private setup and first bilateral implant done in this part of Karnataka.🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

The surgery was done on a 2.5 years old girl child born with deafness and who has resultant mutism(no speech).

Dr Medikeri said "Cochlear implant is an electronic device which is put into the inner ear, that stimulates the hearing nerve directly, bypassing the diseased part and helps one hear..it's useful in children and adults with severe to profound hearing loss , in whom hearing aid doesn't help"👂

Dr Pandurangi added that "It is akin to providing two sense organs( hearing and speech) to a child, who has never heard a sound since birth..Early detection by doctors, parents with screening at birth can aid treatment of many such children..he thanked the whole CI team for the support and appreciated the parents for their initiative and drive to help their kid become near-normal in hearing and speech." 👶👼

FOREIGN BODY DAY!.

Case 1:

5 year old child brought with complaints of right sided throat ache, immediately following lunch. Evaluation revealed fish bone in the right tonsil.The same was removed under short GA.
Foreign body: fish bone.🐟

Case 2:

14 year old, brought with accidental ingestion of bottle cap, while an attempt to drink water from a closed bottle by squeezing it!. With the cap in Cricopharynx ( narrowest part of the gut, in the throat), the same was removed under GA.
Foreign body: bottle cap!.🫙

Foreign bodies are commonly seen in pediatric population, between the ages of 2-4 years. But, not limited to these ages. They can range from a pin, to coin, groundnut, beads, batteries, bottle caps, fish bones etc. Caution is always recommended in kids, and also adults.

It's important to seek medical attention at the earliest to avoid complications.🧑‍⚕️🧑‍🔬
