HPV Virus
- *Human Papillomavirus (HPV)*: a common, highly contagious virus which can cause CERVICAL ( lower part of uterus) cancer in women! It is one of the leading causes of death/ morbidity in Indian women!
Screening is by Pap smear done by gynecologists. But, PREVENTION is the key!
This is the only vaccine preventable Cancer in the world.
HPV Vaccination
- *Types*: Gardasil (4-strain), Gardasil 9 (9-strain), Cervarix (2-strain)
- *Protection*: prevents HPV-related cervical, anal, vaginal, vulvar, and penile cancers
- *Target group*: pre-teens (9-15years), young adults (up to 26 years), but upto 45 years in Indians.
- *Dosage*: 2-3 doses, 6-12 months apart
- *Efficacy*: 90% effective in preventing HPV-related cancers and genital warts.

The consistency of food when we start top feeds or complementary feeds after ages of 6months to babies, in addition to breastmilk!.
As the babies grow, they need, thicker, more granular and more dense foods.
Begin with consistency of water/Breastmilk at 6months age and slowly make it more thicker, eventually reaching a consistency of soft roti/ soft rice by 1 year!.

Certain traditional/ routine practices which can be harmful to a young infant, which need to be AVOIDED at all costs.
1) giving anything but breastmilk to baby till 6months age: this can put pressure on kidneys(yes! Even water), cause infections(botulinism from honey) and worsen their well being.
2) applying mascara/ kajal- infections to eyes, lead harmful to vision.
3) oil in orifices - varied infections including fungal and breathing difficulty in babies.
4) powder application! - inhalation of powder can injure lungs, cause skin rashes by clogging pores of skin, very rarely cancer predisposition too!
5) sideway sleeping is a HIGH risk cause for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), hence, sleeping on back is safest at this age.

WHAT ARE BASICS OF COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING?.
Complementary feeding is the process of introduction of food, in addition to breastmilk at 6months age.
Till the age of 6months, babies must be strictly ONLY ON breastmilk, and very rarely, doctor recommended formula.
The basics of complementary feeding(previously called weaning), are highlighted.
It's important to help our kids enjoy the process of eating and not make them averse to it, which ultimately makes them fussy eaters/ picky eaters as they growup.

HMPV awareness - PART 2!
Once the symptoms of fever, cough, cold with or without difficulty in breathing set in, it's always advisable to visit doctor , if the age of baby is less than 6months.
However, some ominous signs or Danger signs when Emergency medical care is needed include:
1) Poor feeding
2) Lethargy/ excessive sleeping/ excessive crying.
3) Rapid or labored breathing.
4) Persistent fever
5) Dehydration signs with reduced urine output
6) Bluish discoloration of lips or fingers or toes.

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a type of virus that affects the respiratory system. It is highly contagious and spreads through:
- Close contact with an infected person
- Droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes
- Contaminated surfaces
The symptoms can range from mild to severe and include: Runny nose/Cough/Fever/Shortness of breath/ Wheezing to very rarely respiratory failure. Susceptible Population include Young children/ Older adults/People with weakened immune systems/ Those with underlying health conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD)
Treatment includes Rest, Fluids and supportive medications.
Prevention measures include: In ADULTS and children
- Frequent handwashing
- Avoiding close contact with infected individuals
- Staying home when sick
- Getting vaccinated against flu and other respiratory viruses
