World Cancer Day 2025, observed on February 4, focuses on awareness, early detection, and prevention under the theme “United by Unique.”

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a viral agent responsible for causing upper respiratory infections, commonly referred to as the common cold. Although it generally results in mild symptoms, it can cause severe illness in certain individuals. The virus is a member of the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It was first detected in 2001 and has been circulating among humans for numerous decades. The virus is widespread and found globally. The virus is transmitted through the release of infectious respiratory particles into the air from an infected individual, which can then be inhaled by others. This means that close contact with an infected person or sharing an enclosed space with them can lead to infection. Moreover, the virus can enter the body through contact with contaminated surfaces, such as doorknobs or handles, followed by touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
