The Berry-White School of Medicine was established in Dibrugarh in 1900 using a donation of 50,000 Rupees from Doctor John Berry-White who had retired as the civil surgeon of Lakhimpur district and returned to London, where he died in 1896. After World War Two the college moved to nearby hospital premises that had been used by the US Army. On November 3, 1947 the college was formally renamed to become Assam Medical College.
