What is Pterygium ??

A pterygium is a benign (non-cancerous) growth of the conjunctiva — the thin, transparent tissue covering the white part of the eye (sclera) — that extends onto the cornea.
It’s often shaped like a wedge or a wing, starting from the inner (nasal) side of the eye and growing toward the pupil.

⭐ Key Features

Location: Commonly on the nasal side of the eye, but can occur on the temporal side too.

Appearance: A fleshy, triangular or wing-shaped growth.

Progression: It may stay small or slowly grow across the cornea and affect vision.

🧐 Causes / Risk Factors

Chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light (sunlight).

Dust, wind, smoke, or dry environments.

More common in people who live in hot, sunny climates (e.g., “surfer’s eye”).

🛑 Symptoms :-

Redness

Irritation or foreign-body sensation

Dryness

Blurred vision if it encroaches on the cornea

Cosmetic concern

✅ Treatment :-

Conservative: Lubricating eye drops, sunglasses to reduce UV exposure, avoiding dust/wind.

Surgical removal: Indicated if it causes significant discomfort, restricts eye movement, or threatens/affects vision by covering the pupil or inducing astigmatism.
