The Antireflective Coating over Spectacles Lenses

Antireflective coating is another scientific innovation which help us to see better. It was a chance discovery by a keen observation made by Lord Rayleigh who noticed his older glasses were better seeing as compared to the new one of the same power which showed lot of ghost images of reflections from both surface of lens, he asked his optician why it is so? the optician's reply about good polish may be causing shine did not satisfy him, being a physicist himself he further studied the lenses and found that tarnish layer deposited with time on old lens surfaces are actually cutting reflections and providing good vision. He experimented with many materials layer over lens surfaces and invented Antireflective coating. Antireflective coating is basically is a scientifically formulated ultrathin layers of vaporized mineral oxides over the lens surfaces. It is usually done on both outer & inner surfaces of a lens. Let's see how it works. Such a thin layer is do thin that it's thickness is just half or quarter of light's wavelength, so when light strikes the air coating interface a reflected ray also generate while majority rays transmits, at coating lens same thing occurs and we get one more reflected ray traversing in same direction of first reflected ray but here they have photons vibrating in opposite direction due to phase difference so phenomena of "destructive interference" occurs and these rays cancel each other and their energy is absorbed by the atmosphere and a very weak reflected ray may remain which do not bother us. This effect can be enhanced by increasing the number of Antireflective (AR) coatings, lens manufacturer usually make 2+2 coatings that means two coats on front lend surface and two coats on back lens surface. Similarly it can be 8+8 coats. The resultant weak reflected rays may have some changed wavelength so on oblique veiwing on lens surface we can have blue ARC, green ARC, pink ARC, magenta ARC, yellow ARC or red ARC which is desided by mineral oxides or materials used for AR coatings. Antireflective Coating give following advantages
- It significantly reducing light from reflecting or bouncing off from surface of lens
- Reflections of your own eyes or eyelashes on lens surface is eliminated
- It reduces annoying & distracting light reflections from front & back surfaces of your lens
- Lenses appears almost invisible to people looking at you, making your eyes the focus of attention not your spectacles
- In photography & videography your spectacles shines and your eyes are not visible with non- coated lens. Eyes are well seen through spectacles is lenses are AR coated
- Light transmission through AR coated lenses are smooth & undisturbed providing relatively clear & glare free vision. It will reduce your eyestrain
- It is recommended more to computer users
- Modern AR coating also offer enhanced scratch resistance compared to non coated lenses
Sometimes it is felt that little dirt or fingerprint or greesy stains are more clearly seen over coated lens as probably in this area destructive interference is disturbed. Therefore it is important to keep lenses clean using lens cleaners and soft absorbant cloath. Sometimes AR coating gets fall off in places making lens surface irregular with poor transmittance, it is therefore felt that AR coating if not supported by other fixative coats may reduce the lifespan of spectacle lenses.

Polaroid spectacles are an excellent example of use of technology for improving our vision.

In day to day life we frequently come across situations where glare bothers us and affects our vision. it could be bright midday sunlight especially during summer, poor lighting at night, the harsh headlights of approaching vehicles, eye strain & photophobia due to prolonged staring at the electronic screens, low contrast & colour perception causing accidents. In all the adove instances polarized lenses can prove to be of great help, let's see how it works.

Light is basically a electromagnetic wave made up of light particals known as photons, light ray's are basically shower of these particals. During propagation photons vibrates at axis right angles to it's direction of travel and their wavelength (distance travelled in one cycle of vibration) is perceived by us as colour of light.

In light Ray's photons can be vibrating in any of the 360* direction in plane perpendicular to direction of propagation. When they strike a object they bounce back to us with it's information so we can see the object but few of them causing glare (light cloud) or reflections (shines) which affects our vision, intense light beam (too many photons) bounce back to hurts our eyes. It is observed that incoming photons who are vibrating horizontally contributes to glare while those vibrating vertically helps in good vision, it also improves contrast and increases our visual acuity.

Polaroid lenses are made up of celluloids stretched vertically so it's molicules are vertically arranged acting as a series of vertical slits on it's surface. It only allows those photon to pass which are vibrating vertically. Horizontal & obliquely vibrating photons are blocked so number of photons in a light Ray's passing through this filter is reduced making it non hurting, it increases visual acuity, increases contrast, increases colour perception & overall quality of image.

You can veiw comfortably in bright sunshine, in glare reflected by snow, in brightened electronic screen, the good 3D & colour perception gives less stress to eyes, you can appreciate surface texture very well, it also cuts traffic light glare at night driving, you will be able to see dogs & other animals standing in shadows, you can see roads also very well even if light is less. All these improves your visual judgement and prevent accidents or untowards events. In night vision Amber coloured lenses and Antireflective coating also work.

Sometimes you may not feel benefits in night vision in following conditions

- You are still using your old glasses, when your eye power has changed

- If you are driving vehicle, your windshield glass is not clean from outside as well as inside

- Your Spectacles lenses are scratched, not clean, has oily layer or fogged

- You have some eye disease/situation like cataract, corneal opacity, multifocal IOL, high myopia with weak retina, retinal diseases involving rods, peripheral retina, etc.

Polaroid lenses can not be made of your eye power, they have zero power and mostly tinted, for those who already wear their power spects, they have to wear them over their specs as clip on lenses or as bigger goggle over their prescription specs
