Glimmer of the Day: Connecting Across Generations in Psychiatry

Today, I experienced a genuine reminder of the transformative power of mentorship and open dialogue. Sitting down with the youngest member of our team, I had the privilege of mentoring her and, in turn, gaining invaluable insights into the perspectives of Generation Z within the realm of psychiatry.

Her candid reflections and fresh outlooks illuminated the evolving landscape of mental health care, highlighting the importance of understanding and integrating the unique experiences of this generation. It’s a poignant reminder that every interaction—no matter how small—can be a catalyst for growth, empathy, and innovation.

Enter the Plutchik Wheel of Emotions — a powerful tool developed by psychologist Robert Plutchik that visualizes the complex spectrum of human feelings.

🔵 What is it?
It's a colorful, circular diagram that maps out primary emotions such as joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, anticipation, anger, and disgust. These primary emotions can blend to create more nuanced feelings, helping us better recognize and manage our emotional responses.

To perform the Butterfly Hug, you cross your arms over your chest and place your hands on your shoulders. Then, gently alternate tapping your hands on your shoulders, mimicking the wings of a butterfly. This rhythmic tapping stimulates bilateral brain activity, helping to calm the nervous system and reduce feelings of anxiety or overwhelm. The Butterfly Hug can be done anytime and anywhere, providing a quick, effective way to regain emotional balance, promote relaxation, and foster a sense of safety and control during challenging moments.
