Vision therapy is a specialized program of exercises and activities designed to improve and enhance the visual system's functioning. It is typically prescribed and overseen by optometrists who specialize in behavioral and developmental vision care. Vision therapy is often used to address vision problems and conditions that cannot be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses alone. Here are some key aspects of vision therapy:

Vision Problems: Vision therapy is commonly used to treat conditions like strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye), convergence insufficiency (difficulty bringing the eyes together for close tasks), and other binocular vision disorders.

Customized Programs: Vision therapy programs are individualized to meet the specific needs and challenges of each patient. The therapy plan is tailored to address the patient's unique vision issues.

In-Office and Home-Based: Vision therapy may involve both in-office sessions with a therapist and home-based exercises and activities. The in-office sessions typically include the use of specialized tools and equipment.

Visual Exercises: Therapy exercises often include activities that help improve eye teaming, eye tracking, focusing, and visual perception. These exercises aim to retrain the visual system and improve its efficiency.

Progress Monitoring: Throughout the course of vision therapy, the patient's progress is regularly monitored by the eye care professional to make necessary adjustments to the therapy plan.

Duration and Commitment: The duration of vision therapy varies depending on the severity of the vision problem and the individual's progress. Successful outcomes often require a commitment to the therapy program.

Broad Age Range: Vision therapy is not limited to children; it can be beneficial for people of all ages, as visual difficulties can occur at any stage of life.

Non-Invasive: Vision therapy is a non-invasive approach to improving vision and visual skills, which can be an alternative to surgery or other interventions for certain conditions.

The primary goal of vision therapy is to enhance the visual system's capabilities, improve eye coordination, and help individuals achieve more comfortable and efficient vision for various activities, such as reading, learning, and everyday tasks. It is important to consult with an eye care specialist to determine if vision therapy is appropriate for a specific visual issue.

Convergence insufficiency (CI) is an eye condition that affects how your eyes work together when you look at nearby objects. It can cause blurry or double vision when you look at things up close, like a book or a smartphone screen.

CI is caused by a lack of communication between your nerves and the muscles that control your eye movements. The eye muscles themselves are healthy, but the nerves that control them aren't sending the proper message to your eyes to turn inward enough to aim at a close object.

CI can usually be corrected with visual exercises. You can also wear special glasses to temporarily help your symptoms. If CI is not properly treated, it can progress into a much more serious condition called intermittent exotropia.
